EE 491 Project Presentation May07-04 – PDA Based UAS Remote Video Terminal Team Members: Devin Carney Jonathan Farmer Matt Henkes Rene Rios Faculty Advisor: Zhao Zhang

Outline ► Project Objective ► Our Client ► Requirements ► Constraints ► Uses and Users ► Technologies Considered ► Technologies Selected ► Possible Difficulties and Troubleshooting ► Resources ► Testing

Project Objective ► To design and construct an inexpensive prototype remote video terminal (RVT) that is capable of displaying video as well as important telemetry data from a unmanned aerial system (UAS)

Our Client Todd Colten Engineering Team Lead Lockheed Martin Sky Spirit UAS

Requirements ► Budget: $1,000 ► Size: Less than 2 kg ► Operation Time: 2 Hours ► Telemetry data read through RS-232 Input ► Ability to determine own location ► Automatically acquire necessary signals ► Useable in varying conditions

Constraints ► Screen size ► Processor speed ► Resolution ► GPS refresh rate and accuracy ► Screen resolution ► Bandwidth of signals

Intended Uses ► Search and Rescue ► Military surveillance ► Farm observation ► Security Source: http://www.pcsar.org/images/index/main_picture_w520_h390.jpg

Intended Users ► Military personnel ► Search and Rescue personnel ► Farmers ► Law enforcement officers Source: http://www.meridianmagazine.com/exstories/images/Marine%20Taggart.jpg

Considerations ► Environmental ► Health and Safety ► Ethical ► Political ► Social

Technologies Considered ► GPS ► Wireless (802.11b) ► Manual coordinate entry ► USB inputs ► Bluetooth ► Various PDA units ► RS-232

Technologies Selected ► PDA Dell Axim X51v - Built-in 802.11b - Bluetooth Capability - Compact Flash/SD - 480x640 Resolution - 3.7” Display

Technologies Selected ► Video Input Flygrabber CF - Video Capture Card - S-Video Input - SDK available - Compact Flash

Technologies Selected ► GPS USGlobalSat BT-338 - Bluetooth Receiver - SDK Available - 72 hour battery life

Technologies Selected ► RS-232 Transmission Bluesnap Bluetooth Dongle - Serial port profile - Simple interface

Hardware Architecture

Software Architecture

Graphical User Interface (GUI) ► Simple Interface ► Easy to understand ► Video display ► Text overlay ► Landscape or Portrait

Possible Difficulties ► Video Capture  Unfamiliar with Flygrabber technology ► Interface of various components  Bluetooth with RS-232, Video overlay ► Battery Life  Possible need for extended-life battery ► GUI Programming  Minimal experience with C#

Resources ► Personnel Resources  Estimated amount of time each member will spend on the project

Resources ► Financial Resources  Amount of budget spent on selected components

Resources ► Team Schedule

Testing ► Team testing ► Outside user testing ► Advisor testing ► Client testing

Summary ► After considering many technologies, the team has decided upon several components that will provide both simplicity of design for the team and value for Lockheed Martin. These will combine to create a successful RVT that will meet the various needs of Lockheed Martin.
