1 AIG Program: Staff Update 2010-2011

2 New AIG Standards In response to the 2008 performance audit from the Office of the State Auditor, the NC AIG Program Standards were developed by a statewide committee and approved by the State Board of Education in July 2009. The state performance audit recommended that LEAs be held more accountable and be more transparent with their local programs.

3 New AIG Standards 6 Standards with 51 Practices Student Identification Differentiated Curriculum and Instruction Personnel and Professional Development Comprehensive Programming Within a Total School Community Partnerships Program Accountability

4 In response to the audit, all LEAs submitted their 2010-2013 local AIG plans to DPI, after local board approval. In the local AIG plan, every standard and practice had to be addressed and categorized as maintained (already in place), focused (in place by 2013) or future (in place by 2016). New AIG Plan 2010-2013

5 Implications and Actions Our greatest and most immediate attention will be focused on the following areas: Equitable and transparent identification procedures (Standard 1) Visible effectiveness (Standard 2) Expertise in appropriate differentiated content and instructional methods (Standard 3) Effectual communication with varied audiences (Standards 4 & 5) Continuous improvement of program procedures and services through proactive evaluation (Standard 6)

6 Standard 1: Student Identification Revised the identification criteria and process (see brochure for more details) Only 4 th through 12 th graders will be identified (unless transferred from another LEA) Focused practice: Developing more non-traditional assessment methods

7 Standard 2: Differentiated Curriculum and Instruction Area for potential growth Focused practice: Grouping strategies, Tiered Assignments, Curriculum Compacting, Independent Study/ Research Skills; Using Ongoing Assessment to Differentiate Classroom Instruction Future practice: 21 st Century skills; Social and Emotional Needs; Collaboration of all Professional Staff

8 Standard 3: Personnel and Professional Development Local certification process being developed for regular classroom teachers All AIG licensed teachers will be required to complete renewal credits Focused practice: Establishes specific and appropriate professional development requirements for all personnel involved in AIG program and services, including classroom teachers, EC personnel, counselors, school administrators; Aligning professional development opportunities with NC Teacher Standards Future practice: Places AIG students in classrooms with AIG licensed or LEA AIG certified teachers

9 Standard 4: Comprehensive Programming Within a Total School Community Inclusion of the whole school community in the AIG program The majority of AIG services are provided through the inclusion of differentiated curricula and instruction into the regular education classroom. Focused practice: Communicates with K-12, especially at transition points; Future practice: Places AIG students in classrooms with AIG licensed or LEA AIG certified teachers; Social and emotional needs; Intentional programming for more diverse populations

10 Standard 5: Partnerships Communicates more effectively with parents, including using native language Focused practice: Involving parents and community more; Creating partnerships with higher education and business/industry

11 Standard 6: Program Accountability Monitoring the implementation of the AIG program and plan. Focused practice: Monitoring growth and dropout rates; AIG advisory committee; Share information with public.
