Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 2–2) Main Idea Example 1:Interpret Line Graphs Example 2:Interpret Line Graphs

Main Idea/Vocabulary Interpret line graphs.

Example 1 Interpret Line Graphs FOOD PRICES The average retail price for a loaf of white bread for the years 1996–2004 is shown in the graph below. Predict the price of a loaf of white bread in 2010. Continue the graph with a dotted line in the same direction until you reach a vertical position of 2010.

Example 1 Interpret Line Graphs Notice that the increase has been fairly steady. Answer: By extending the graph, you can predict that the price of a loaf of white bread in 2010 will be about $1.20.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 A.$75,000 B.$80,000 C.$90,000 D.$120,000 INCOME The average income for full-time employees of a large corporation for the years 1995–2004 is shown in the graph to the right. Predict the average income in 2008.

Example 2 Interpret Line Graphs BOWLING The graph at the right shows the number of participants in bowling from 1975 to 2000. What does the graph tell you about the popularity of bowling? Answer: The graph shows that the popularity of bowling dropped in the mid-1980s, but it has since recovered and grown in popularity. Interactive Lab: Making Predictions from Graphs

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A.The popularity of the fair has dropped since 1985. B.The popularity of the fair has increased since 1990. C.The popularity of the fair increased from 1985 to 1995 and then dropped through 2005. D.The popularity of the fair dropped from 1985 to 2000 and then increased through 2005. COUNTY FAIR The graph at the right shows the attendance at a county fair from 1985 to 2005. What does the graph tell you about the popularity of the fair?
