The Business of Beads The Math & Science Center presents by Gail Warren PowerPoint Presentation by Susan L. Cerruti

Can We Fix It?

How Many More? We know: 1 SET of 7 beads 28 beads in all How many more SETS of beads do we need?

How Many More? We write a PROPORTION to get our answer. A PROPORTION is a math statement of two equal ratios that compare parts to wholes. A RATIO is written as a fraction. Our proportion will compare the total number of beads to the sets of beads on the necklace.

The Proportion 7 28 __ = 1 ? How many SETS of beads on the necklace? How many beads on the necklace? Multiply the two diagonal numbers. 28 x 1 = 28 Divide by the remaining number. 28 - 7 =.. 4

How Many More Sets Do We Need? There are 4 total sets of beads on the finished necklace, BUT… we already have one. How many MORE sets do we need? How many beads would that be? 4 – 1 = 3 3 x 7 = 21

Fix Grandma’s Necklace Help me put the beads on the necklace to complete it. Thank You!

Make Your Necklace You will get: 1 set of beads 2 different colors 1 string Your necklace needs a total of 24 beads. Each group has a different number of beads in their set.

Make Your Necklace Work in groups. Decide on a pattern using all the beads. Draw your pattern.

How Many More Do You Need? How many more sets do you need? How many more beads do you need? Remember: You will need to write a… PROPORTION

Proportion Review Beads On Necklace Sets of Beads I have a broken 24 bead necklace with three beads in a set. How many more sets do I need? How many more beads do I need? 3 24 __ 1 ? = 8 7 sets 21 beads

Finish Your Necklace Write & solve your proportion. Show me. Get your beads. Finish your necklace.

Can You Match? Can you match the correct set to its matching necklace? How many SETS would there be on this 24 bead necklace?

Price Matters Store A $4 a pack 4 beads Store B $5 a pack 6 beads Store C $7 a pack 8 beads Which store would you want to buy from? Why? You want to make one more of this necklace for your friend. How much will it cost you?

Calculate Cost You want to make a 24 bead necklace. Store A $4 a pack 4 beads Store B $5 a pack 6 beads Store C $7 a pack 8 beads Write a proportion to figure out how much 24 beads would cost. Store A 4 beads $4 24 beads = $24

Calculate Cost You want to make a 24 bead necklace. Store A $4 a pack 4 beads Store B $5 a pack 6 beads Store C $7 a pack 8 beads Write a proportion to figure out how much 24 beads would cost. Store A Store B 24 beads = $24 6 beads $5 $20

Calculate Cost You want to make a 24 bead necklace. Store A $4 a pack 4 beads Store B $5 a pack 6 beads Store C $7 a pack 8 beads Write a proportion to figure out how much 24 beads would cost. Store A Store B Store C 8 beads $7 24 beads = $24 $20 $21
