UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 Target station design evolution Due to the increase field volume the particle capture was increased compared to the old target station, expected to become new baseline layout at IDS meeting in April

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 Front end design work Muon Front End baseline description: Longitudinal drift Buncher Phase-Energy Rotation Ionisation Cooling Risks and mitigations : Transmission losses and secondary particles -> Chicane RF break down in magnetic fields ->Bucket coil lattice

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 Chicane for secondary particle suppression Heat deposition from secondaries is significant: Three issues: Activation of the linac Heat load on superconductors Radiation damage Losses are 2-3 orders of magnitude too high → Mitigation: Chicane for high momentum particles Proton absorber for low momentum protons as protons stop quicker than pions/muons in material Transverse collimation

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 High power RF in magnetic field Reduced magnetic field at RF cavities May enable higher accelerating voltage Comparable transmission For identical number of cells (but longer footprint) Increased magnetic field energy (and cost) Newest results show improved performance compared to study 2a Expected to become new baseline in April meeting. First indication of 6D cooling

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 Linac and RLAs. Linac and RLA1 design updated following discussions at the Mississippi meeting. Presented updated design at IPAC 2011. Information has been input into the ADT for the linac. RLA1 all beam elements designed and ready for costing, RLA2 requires EM design of magnets (dipoles, QP & sextupoles). First costing of Linac and RLA’s to be available before Multiparticle tracking and performance analyses planned for Summer 2012, Linac & RLA’s

Beam dynamics has been crosschecked using independent codes. Preliminary magnet design was studied. Injection/extraction has been designed. Engineering studies has been initiated. The principles of NS-FFAG are being tested at EMMA. Chromaticity correction scenario still to be defined!

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 Muon Storage Ring work (D. Kelliher, J. Pasternak, C. Prior, Su Wan, Norbert Collomb, Neil Bliss, A. Kurup) (July 2011 – December 2011) Established injection scheme into the production straight with achievable septum and kicker strengths. (D.K.) Identified injection timing problem - Kicker rise/fall time could be challenging with <500ns between bunches. (C.P., D.K.) Document to allow costing of ring put together using accelerator design tool. (D.K, A.K.) Design of insertion into arc to ease injection. (J.P, S.Y) 10 GeV design for LENF (J.P., S.Y) Preliminary work for tunnel layout – consideration of module installation, access shafts, health & safety legislation, services etc (N.C., N.B)

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 Costing exercise Costing of the Accelerator complex. Detailed definition of the breakdown structure for the whole facility. Development of the Accelerator Design Tool (ADT). Spreadsheet to store the physics design and the costing information in the same format. Development of macros for the ADT Translation macros needed to upload the information in the format required by the CERN costing tool. Macros to produce MADX and G4beamline input files to verify information in the ADT and feedback engineering considerations to accelerator physicists.

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 FETS Status Ion source operates at nearly design specs (2 ms, 50 mA) but persisting problems with heater electronics and spare parts LEBT characterization nearly complete, but origin of residual source misalignment still unknown Beam at injection into RFQ ~ 0.3-0.35 pimmmrad (measured) Detailed study of influence of RFQ modulation on field flatness finished and RFQ design adjusted. RFQ manufacture started Unitil 31 March, 1st section manufactured, section 2-4 roughing stage finished Preliminary cost estimate for manufacture 160-200 k£ - 6 month Still expecting circulator to be delivered, high power RF distribution ordered, setup to be finalized until summer Work focus shifted towards MEBT.

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 The FETS ion source can deliver 60 mA H – to the RFQ @1 ms 50 Hz or @2 ms 25 Hz Normalised rms emittances: H 0.49 πmm.mRad V 0.29 πmm.mRad Focus now on ion source plasma investigations. First spectroscopic analyses finished, and further activities in collaboration with CERN and university of Jyväskylä (UV spectroscopy). Dan Faircloth, Scott Lawrie, ISIS

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 The machine shown is typical of the type of machine required to produce the RFQ. Large, rigid and precise – not a combination that many manufacturers invest in. RFQ Manufacture

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 RFQ Manufacture NAB Precision Engineering Ltd machined the outer face of one major vane block flat and then machined one roughing pass of the internal vane profile maintaining a distance of at least 10mm from the finished profile. This was done to assess the deformation due to the internal stresses that are induced during the hot rolling production process. A sufficient number of roughing passes will be required tuntil the copper is stable to less than the finished tolerances. This deformation of the outer face was measured after the vane profile machining was performed. The result was a very encouraging 0.10mm.

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 30st January 2012 Stress analyses for assembly procedure To avoid deformation of RFQ vane pieces in the assembly process a special Carrier for assembly is made. The projected deformation is far below the tolerances. Ready for RFQ production - Request of quotes this month, delivery until March 2012. P. Savage Imperial
