DOSAGE EQUIPMENT

ORAL ADMINISTRATION Medicine cups are frequently used for oral administrations, especially for larger amounts. Equivalents of metric, apothecary, & household measurements are shown.

ORAL ADMINISTRATION Calibrated droppers can be used to administer small quantities. –The diameter of the dropper hole determines how much is delivered in each drop. –Properly calibrated dropper usually accompanies medication. –Oral, ear, or eye medications can be delivered

ORAL ADMINISTRATION Devices for administering oral medications to children. Parents need to be educated on correct measurement. Household spoons are not accurate for measurement.

PARENTERAL ADMINISTRATION Syringes for parenteral administration (injections) have a luerlock hub for a needle. Oral syringes do not. Take note of the different parts of a syringe (needle, barrel, plunger) This syringe is a 3 ml syringe –It is filled with 2 ml solution. –Each line is calibrated for 1 ml solution in this syringe.

PARENTERAL ADMINISTRATION Some syringes come preassembled and prefilled for a single dosage.

PARENTERAL ADMINISTRATION 1 ml syringe is sometimes called tuberculin (TB) syringe –Used when small dose must be measured (< 0.5 ml). –Calibrated in hundredths (0.01) of a ml, each (0.1) labeled –This syringe contains 0.37 ml 3 ml safety syringe, each line = 0.1 ml

PARENTERAL ADMINISTRATION Different syringe sizes (5,10, 30, & 60 ml) Note different calibrations.

PARENTERAL ADMINISTRATION Insulin syringes:

PARENTERAL ADMINISTRATION Infusion pumps

TOPICAL ADMINISTRATION Dermal –Roll on applicator Eye (opthalmic) dropper Ear (otic) droppers

INHALANT ADMINISTRATION Nasal –Topical to nasal passages: Nasacort –Systemic nasal spray: Stadol Respiratory tract –Metered dose inhalers (MDI): Albuterol –Nebulizers deliver fine, mist with medication

INHALANT ADMINISTRATION Spacers: placed on inhaled medication canisters to improve patient’s administration techniques –Requires prescription –Patient education necessary

MISCELLANEOUS ADMINISTRATION ROUTES: VAGINAL Vaginal cream applicator
