1 Li 3 6.9 Bell Work Nov 17, 2014 (1) Na (atomic number is 11)
SPI Periodic Table Nov 17, 2014 A) Number your paper from one to five, and open your book to pages B) Write down the five chemical symbols shown below. C) Then locate each of these elements on the periodic table by using the element's atomic number. D) Next write the correct name for each element next to the chemical symbol. Note: Use pages to help you (1) Na (atomic number is 11) (2) N (atomic number is 7) (3) Cl (atomic number is 17) (4) K (atomic number is 19) (5) Ca (atomic number is 20) 3 Li Lithium 6.9 Atomic Number

Humor  Silly Thought 13  I took a course in speed waiting… …Now I can wait an hour in only ten minutes

4 Elements and Compounds
Notes SPI Elements and Compounds What Is An Element? a substance that CANNOT be broken down into a simpler substance by CHEMICAL means. In other words…you CANNOT change one element into a different element with a chemical reaction Each individual element is a unique particle called an atom So in other words… elements are the different types of atoms 3 Li Lithium 6.9 Example: Lithium is an element. Here is one lithium atom

5 Elements and Compounds
Notes SPI Elements and Compounds More About Elements: Elements’ chemical symbols always start with one capital letter Can be followed by one or more lower case letters Examples of Elements: H = the element hydrogen represents one hydrogen atom Na = the element sodium represents one sodium atom Uub=the element ununbium represents one ununbium atom

6 Elements and Compounds CARBON, HYDROGEN, & OXYGEN
Notes SPI Elements and Compounds What Is a Compound? …is a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded via a chemical reaction to form a new substance. COMPOUND EXAMPLES: NaCl = (Table Salt) CO2 = (Carbon dioxide) C6H12O6 = (Glucose) The properties of the new substance are different from the substances that you started with. SODIUM AND CHLORINE CARBON AND OXYGEN CARBON, HYDROGEN, & OXYGEN

7  Notes Examples: H2O C12H22O11 CH3COOH More About Compounds:
SPI Elements and Compounds More About Compounds: Formulas for compounds will always contain more than one capital letter. This is how you can tell the difference between an element and a compound… count the number of capital letters! Examples: H2O This is the compound called water C12H22O11 This the compound called table sugar CH3COOH This is the acidic compound called vinegar …is a compound for it has more than 1 capital letter …is a compound for it has more than 1 capital letter …is a compound for it has more than 1 capital letter

8 Break Time! Break Time! Stand and Stretch!
SPI Periodic Table . Stand and Stretch! You have been sitting for a mighty long time. Let's take a 1 minute break to stand and stretch.

9 Is this an element or a compound?
Review Activity Is this an element or a compound? Write a capital E if you think it is an element Write a capital C if you think it is a compound Cs (Cesium) Why?...is a pure substance, consists of only one type of atom How to tell?...It only has one capital letter! Element

10 Is this an element or a compound?
Review Activity Is this an element or a compound? Write a capital E if you think it is an element Write a capital C if you think it is a compound NaCl (Sodium Chloride) Why?... has two atoms chemically bonded together How to tell?...It has more than one capital letter! Compound
