4 Absolute Rule!!! Mixed numbers must be converted to Improper Fractions! Step 1: Change all mixed numbers to improper fractions. Step 2: Top x Top, Bottom x Bottom. Step 2b: CANCEL! Canceling is dividing a numerator and a denominator by a common factor. Cancel before multiplying! Step 3: Simplify! Simplify! Simplify!

5 How do I know to multiply? Look for the normal signs. x ; ; ( )( ) Look for the word, ‘of’, or ‘out of’. When you want part of the whole, you multiply the two fractions/ mixed numbers. When modeling multiplication of fractions, look for: –The fraction represented by the column –The fraction represented by the row –The double shaded region over the total number of squares is your answer.
