11-2 Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders Objective: To find the surface area of a prism and a cylinder

Essential Understanding: to find the surface area of a 3-D figure, find the sum of the areas of all the surfaces of the figure.

Prisms The height of a prism is the length of the altitude, which forms a perpendicular segment that join the planes of the bases. The later faces are rectangles and a lateral edge is an altitude. Some or all of the lateral faces are nonrectangular.

p. 703: 1, 2, 5, 7-10 (can use “net”)

Surface Area Day 2 Objective: Find the surface area of a cylinder

Cylinder Lateral Area = 2πrhSurface Area = LA + 2πr 2

Steps 1.Sketch and label each face of solid 2.Calculate the area of each face 3.Add each face to find the total area 7 cm 3 cm 7 cm Circumference = 2πr 6π cm 9π9π 9π9π 42π 60π cm 2 SA cylindar = 2πr 2 + 2πrh 9π9π A = πr 2 W.S.11-2 A = (6π)7
