Lou Gehrig 1903-1941 Was the star player of the Yankees in the 1930’s During his career as a Yankee he: Played 2,130consecutive games hit 493 home runs Won 6 world championships 1932- hit 4 home runs in one game Got 2 MVP awards Won a Triple Crown in 1934 Was known as the “Iron Horse” because he played through injuries such as: Back spasms Broken toe Broken thumb 17 different hand fractures

Lou Gehrig In 1939 he was diagnosed with a rare muscle disease He announced it to the crowd of his last baseball game and said: “Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth” The muscle disease is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALA) The nickname for it is “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” The disease: Breaks down tissues in the nervous system Affects the nerves responsible for movement Makes you lose the ability to move any muscle in the body

Mary McLeod Bethune ◦ Born in Mayesville, South Carolina, on July 20, 1875 ◦ In 1904 she moved to Daytona, Florida, where she created a school for African American girls. ◦ The school merged to form Bethune-Cookman College in 1929 ◦ A Founder of the National Council of Negro Women in 1939 ◦ Recruited to the Federal Council of Negro Affairs ◦ Helped establish “Black Cabinet” ◦ Pushed to get blacks included in the New Deal programs.

8. William H. Hastie ◦ Born November 17, 1904 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ◦ Was a high ranking official in the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt ◦ Chosen by Harold Ickes, Secretary of the Interior, to serve as assistant solicitor. ◦ One of his tasks was to reorganize the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands ◦ Served as federal district judge from 1937 to 1939 ◦ Appointed by Roosevelt to judgeship. He was the first African American to serve of the federal bench. ◦ Became involved in the March of Washington. ◦ Served as governor of the Virgin Island until his retirement in 1971.
