5 Today it is generally accepted that these nature and nurture work in tandem to create the people we ultimately become. Adoption and twin studies support both nature and nurture as factors in human development. The environment in which a person is raised can trigger expressions of behavior for which they are genetically predisposed; genetically identical people raised in different environments may exhibit different behavior. Three types of gene-environment correlations (rGE) exist: passive (ambiguous correlation), evocative (one factor invokes a response in the other), and active (one factor influences a preference for another). 6 Whether certain cognitive and learning abilities are influenced more by genetics ("nature") or by environment ("nurture") is a continuous debate. Cognitive genomics focuses on how genes relate to the health and activity of the brain. This field investigates the genetic causes for many neural disorders such as Down syndrome. Educational neuroscience seeks to link an understanding of genetics and brain processes with how people learn, for the purpose of informing classroom instruction and experiences. One of the most extensively studied behavioral traits is intelligence. An individual's IQ level is partially attributable to genetics. Some learning disabilities are caused by neurobehavioral disorders, which are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors; however, the specific genetic basis of these disorders is often unknown. 8 Key terms cognitive genomics This field studies how genes relate to the health and activity of the brain. gene-environment correlation A relationship in which exposure to environmental conditions depends on an individual's genotype. IQ Short for Intelligence Quotient; a score derived from one of several standardized tests designed to assess intelligence. neuroscience The scientific study of the nervous system. This field looks for links between behavior and physical structures in the brain. phenotype the observable expression of a gene Free to share, print, make copies and changes. Years later, researchers compare Marla to her biological mother and find several similarities in personality. What does this kind of adoption study help to reveal? A) The lack of influence environment has on personality B) The role of genetics on the development of personality C) The importance of remaining close with one's family of origin D) The difficulty of adjusting to non-biological parents
