Government responsibility under the King Collect Taxes Created a coin system Helped end unemployment Provided Government jobs Defended the city-state of Corinth Famous Periander (considered a harsh/cruel but effective ruler) -Trade flourished -Attempted to have a Canal built across the Isthmus of Corinth -Established colonies for Corinth (Syracuse) -Lots of Government buildings and public works projects

6 Education Boys went to school from ages 7-14
Similar to Athens, but not as good Subjects: Poetry, Drama, Public Speaking, Reading, Writing, Science, Music and Arithmetic. Military School at the age of 18 Wealthy provided higher education (accounting etc.)

Lechaion Road- connected the city with their port at the Saronic Gulf (long walls on both sides) “Temple of Hills”

Traded with neighboring city-states Public works jobs – building temples, aqueducts, roads and port Music and Art Cultural center for education

Rival with Athens in the Peloponnesian War Isthmian Truce (Warfare stopped for the Isthmian games) Temple of Isthmia dedicated to Poseidon Earthquakes destroyed the city in 551 and 375 B.C.E. Set up Syracuse as a colony

11 Currency Silver coins called “colts” or “staters”
Had Athena in a Corinthian Helmet and Pegasus on the other side
