3. Five senses poetry is writing a poem using one line for each of the five senses (sight, smell, touch, hear, and taste) to describe the topic of your poem.
During the prewriting stage, we will complete a graphic organizer to brainstorm ideas for a five senses poem.

Evil sounds like… soldiers knocking on your door at night.
Evil feels like… the cold steel of a gun against your neck.
Evil smells like… gunpowder and shoe polish on the uniform of a Nazi soldier.
Evil tastes like… dirt in mouth as you lie on the ground, hiding from the Nazis.
Evil looks like… the sharp teeth of a German Sheppard flashing in the dark.
This example is good for students who are just learning the five senses poetry form. Each line begins with a prompt that helps the writer create a sentence that includes each sensory detail. The poem describing Evil was written during reading the book Number of the Stars.

Today, we will be writing a five senses poem using the word love.
We will use a graphic organizer to gather ideas about each of the five senses as they relate to love.
The teacher will dictate students’ ideas on a graphic organizer on an overhead.
Each student will complete a graphic organizer at their desk.

7. Assessment activity
The teacher will give the class several concept ideas to choose from.
The teacher will write the following concepts on chart paper for the class to see: friendship, sadness, playing at recess, doing homework.
Each student will choose one of the concepts to create their own five senses poem.
The students will use a blank graphic organizer to brainstorm sensory ideas.

9. Five senses poetry is a fun and easy way to describe a subject using the five senses (touch, taste, smell, hear, sight).
Each line in the poem describes the title or subject using one of the five senses.
During the drafting stage, the ideas from your completed graphic organizers can be used to write a five senses poem.

Christmas
I see the Christmas tree and children sitting on Santa’s knee.
I smell the cookies I make and the Christmas cake.
I hear bells ringing and children singing.
I taste the Christmas sweets and all the other treats.
I feel the Christmas toys made for girls and boys.
This is another good example of five senses poetry. Notice, that this poem also has a stem on each line “I see…”, “I smell”. etc. Not all five senses poems have to include these. Instead you could write: “Christmas is a Christmas tree and children sitting on Santa’s knee”, “It’s the smell of cookies and cake baking”, and the sound of bells ringing and children singing”, Christmas tastes like sweets and treats”, and it feels like toys made for girls and boys”. Notice that we can rewrite it so that the beginning of each line really isn’t necessary.
