  Concentrated solutions- has a large amount of solute in a solvent  Ex maple syrup  Dilute solution- has a small amount of solute in a solvent  Ex Tap water  Think of apple juice: ever seen made from concentrate? This is juice where water has been taken out; dilute solutions are juice that has been watered down Types of Solutions

  Concentration tells you how much solute is dissolved in a certain amount of solvent (ie 50 g of sugar dissolved in 100 ml of water)  See concentration demo  10 g dissolved in 50ml of water  15 g dissolved in 100ml of water  6g dissolved in 25 ml of water Concentration

  White sugar that you buy are really just sugar crystals  Sugar beets or sugar cane are boiled down making it more concentrated as the water evaporates leaving behind the sugar crystals Did you know?

  Saturated solutions- involve a solvent that can not dissolve any more solute  Ex borax crystal ornaments  Unsaturated solutions- a solution where the solvent can dissolve more solute

  Saturated solution Activity

  If a saturated solution has a concentration of 20g per 100ml of water, how many grams of the solute could be dissolved in 50 ml of water? In 400 ml of water?

  Solubility is the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solvent at a certain temperature  Three factors affect solubility 1.Temperature 2.Type of solvent 3.Type of solute Solubility

  Supersaturated- add a solute (ie sugar) to hot water and make a saturated solution. The let the solution cool- what happens?  Solution will contain more solute than a saturated solution normally would

  For a solute to dissolve in a solvent, it has to be able to bind with the solvent particles  If the solute particles do not bind with the solvent particles than the solute is said to be ‘insoluble’

  Disappearing Nail Polish Activity
