Changing Demographics and the Disconnection of Public with Agriculture Presented by Lynsey Such

Agriculture Historically Hunter-Gatherer- hunting and gathering was the only mode of subsistence for 99% of human history. Over 200 years ago Today

Population Growth World Growth Rate- 1.2% U.S. - 0.7%

Agricultural Revolution The Farming Revolution Plant Domestication Farmed Animals British Revolution- The British Agricultural Revolution is considered one of the causes of the Industrial Revolution because improved agricultural productivity freed up workers to work in other sectors of the economy.

Agriculture and Industrialization Industrial Revolution Population growth and industrialization were two important factors in the growth of commercial agriculture and the disconnection of people with agriculture

Affect of Immigration and Migration on Agriculture in U.S.

USDA: Selected Farm Characteristics by Race of Principal Operator Most people think that farmers are poor, white Caucasians males that do manual work. The continued diversity of race in our country is important to acknowledge when analyzing market changes.

Importance of Communication Through Marketing Chain Vertical Integration Producer from consumer went from personal to impersonal with a growing economy

Separation of People from Farms Job Loss or Job Movement? Agriculture Policy Decisions Lifestyle and Preference Shifts

Job Loss or Movement? Yahoo Study of “most useless degrees” Useless Degree #1 - Agriculture Number of Students Awarded Degree in 2008-2009: 24,988 Typical coursework: Crops, plant diseases, animal husbandry, basic veterinary science. U.S. Department of Labor projects 64,000 fewer jobs in this field over the next seven years. Total Number of Agricultural Managers in 2008: 1,234,000 Projected Change in Number of Jobs 2008-2018: -64,600 Percent Change: -5

Agricultural Policy Agricultural Industry needs help from policy makers because of disconnection between agricultural production and consumption needs (demand). Problem: Farmers have no production control compared to other industries. Aggregate net farm income is at reasonable levels so why does the producer receive such a little portion of the total price? Economically: when prices drop production should decrease and farmers should reduce their volume of output, instead in agriculture we see over production Farmers produce as much as they can in hopes that another Yellow #2 corn producers has crop failure.

Lifestyle and Cooking Practices Shift Changing Demographics in United States brought different cuisines and cultural practices when it comes food consumption, shifting the demand in agricultural products.

Food Preference Shift Today: FAST PACE LIFESTYLE Technological and Manufacturing processes today brought in new cultural practices and food preferences  food processing What we get off the shelf today is not what it looks like at the farm Focus on easy and ready to go food
