1 Instrumentation and Controls Test Plan Review 17 th February 2012 Roy Preece (STFC RAL)

2 Instrumentation –Senors Silicon Diode and Cernox with the bobbin style termination. Cernox placed at 4K surfaces on the Helium chamber and 2 nd stage of the cryo coolers Silicon Diode placed on all 77K surfaces and at the 1 st stage of the cryo coolers For the 77K shield bore flush mount LR type Silicon Diode sensors have been used. –Heaters Heater pack on the fill line at the lowest point to boil off excess LN2 during pre-cool Heater pack on the bottom surface of the Helium chamber to be used as a pressure raiser. Each heater pack has a Cernox sensor close to act as thermal interlock and feedback. –Voltage taps Internal taps at the internal resistor / diode pack External at the upper and lower points of the HTS leads. –Pressure gauge Fitted at the vent tower and will act in the Pressure / Heater feedback Fitted to the fill line tower to ascertain an thermo-acoustic oscillations

9 Control Control system designed and assembled by the Daresbury group Pre Cool –Monitoring of all sensors, Pressure and Vacuum –Boil off of the residual LN2 using the heater control He Cool –Monitoring of the sensors, Pressure, He Level sensors, Vacuum, Cryo Cooler compressors and water flow. Operation at temperature –Monitoring of the sensors, Pressure, He Level sensors, Vacuum, Cryo Cooler compressors and water flow. –Control of the He pressure raising circuit. Approximatly 100 mBar over pressure. Energising the magnet and operation. –All monitoring and control of the heaters to maintain the slight over-pressure. –Interaction with the Power supply racks and DAQ / Quench protection system.
