Se7en Opening Scene

Location and Setting You can’t really see where the opening scene is which gives an element of mystery which is very typical of the thriller genre. You can see that where it is, is dark and gloomy which is a running theme throughout the film. It gives an accurate representation of John Doe, because we never know very much about him, again he has a lot of mystery around him.

Lighting and Colour Mostly, the director has used yellow desaturated light. This is used to create atmosphere because it makes you feel uneasy and you do not want to be where ever it is that the character is.

Props and Costume The only real example of costume is this OTS is the bandages on the hands of John Doe. These are there because he’s been shaving the finger prints off of his hands. This gives us a big insight into what he’s like because only someone who is psychotic would be doing this. There’s a huge number of props used in this opening title scene. A razor Pictures Notebooks The fact that John Doe is keeping a notebook of everything he’s done shows he’s methodical and has to plan everything out so he’s one step ahead of the law. This is very typical of thrillers. The razor adds to the action because it’s a sharp instrument often used as a weapon.

Camera and Sounds The majority of the camera angles used are Extreme close up, and above close ups. This focusses your attention on the instruments John Doe is using and tells you that this is the sort of character that’s going to be appearing in he film. The sound really puts you on edge and some where at the beginning you hear a women screaming which is loud and then becomes distorted. All this is very typical of the thriller genre.

A Summary Everything that appears in the opening scene of Se7en is very typical of the genre and it can all be linked into the plot line of the film.
