SLAVERY (page 1) YOUR TASK IS AS FOLLOWS There are 21 slides in this presentation. On 18 of them are comments made by the general public of Bristol after they had been around an exhibition showing how the City of Bristol had made a fortune out of slavery. These comments are how these people interpreted the exhibition. You need to remember that people react to things in different ways and that the exhibition would have had varying effects on everyone who saw it. Your job is to put these differing responses into categories GO TO PAGE 2 Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY (page 2) YOUR TASK IS AS FOLLOWS You are going to read each statement and will then decide which of the following categories it belongs to. Each category has a different coloured background, so as soon as you have found a match, change the background colour of the slide to the correct colour. (Go to FORMAT, BACKGROUND, DOWN ARROW BAR, CHOOSE COLOUR, APPLY) About slavery in history = RED About people today = YELLOW About Bristol today = BLUE About Bristol in the past = GREEN About the exhibition = ORANGE About none of these = PURPLE One has been done for you already to give you a start - Good Luck Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Its about time Bristol acknowledged the fact that it was built on the blood of its black sisters and brothers. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Former colonies renamed themselves. The name of Colston needs replacing with slave names on our streets and buildings. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Acknowledge all of this in a substantial piece of sculpture in a prominent position NOT THE SAD LITTLE PLAQUE on the industrial museum ! Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY I explained as much as I could to my 3 and 5 year old children. They cried for the black children taken away from their parents and forced to work. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Devastating as a new resident of Bristol. I am shocked by my own ignorance, humbled by how much suffering and barbarity built this citys fortunes. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY The exhibition should be permanent. Every pupil should see it. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY It makes me MAD that people are still comparing us with animals. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Good to see no mention of the myths about Jews being involved in this horrific trade. It was purely a Christian activity. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY As a black person who has had the advantage of visiting the Transatlantic museum in Liverpool, I felt this exhibition did not have enough information. The fact is it was too polished, tailored to the middle class. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY A very biased exhibition. There were other Bristolians (than slave traders). What about the non- conformists and Quakers ? Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY A formal public apology needs to be made plus some kind of reparation. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Sorry ! (white man) Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Bristol should acknowledge its history. However, todays residents are not responsible for their predecessors cruelty. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department

SLAVERY Perhaps people will feel about animals in 100 years time as we feel about slavery today. Henley-in-Arden High School History Department
