2 Amherst | Hampshire | Mount Holyoke | Smith | UMass Amherst Strategic Planning for the Five College Consortium of Western Massachusetts Context Cooperation and joint projects began in 1920s and 1930s Consortium founded in 1960s (4 campuses became 5) Nearly 100 faculty and administrative groups meet regularly Joint: 11 Certificates, 2 depts., 1 major, 20 faculty members Joint: Libraries, transportation, high speed fiber optic network ~6000 student cross registrations/yr; ~40 faculty exchanges/yr Last self-study and external review completed 1999 Consortium: 35 employees; $7 million annual budget Economic downturn of 2008 caused the Board of Directors to call in Spring 2009 for bold initiatives – a Hampshire moment. New Executive Director hired April 2009

5 Amherst | Hampshire | Mount Holyoke | Smith | UMass Amherst Strategic Planning for the Five College Consortium of Western Massachusetts Guiding Principles Underlying every aspect of this plan are three core ideals: Seamlessness: maximal opportunity and minimal barriers to collaboration, where pursued; Thoughtful convergence: synergistic program development, resource sharing and cost- containment, where appropriate; and Scope: a consortium of local impact, regional influence, national importance and global reach.

For each: project scope responsible people and groups goals and delivery date outcome The Initiatives Chart is posted on our website. We monitor progress and provide updates every 3-4 months.

Three main leadership groups receive formal annual reports on our progress on the strategic initiatives. Board of Directors: ED, Presidents, Chancellor Focus on 3 areas: transportation/scheduling; IT; admin convergence Chief Academic Officers Chief Financial Officers
