7 III. The Four Noble Truths – the core of Buddha’s teachings. 1. Sufferings is a part of existence. -Existence means pain and sorrow.

8 2.The origins of suffering come from desire – human misery stems from their constant yearning and desire for the temporary pleasures of this world.

9 -Problem – People become attached to things they must sooner or later lose. - People want things they can never have.

10 3. The way to end all suffering is to rid yourself of all desire.

11 4. You must follow the Eightfold Path to rid yourself of desire. – The way to overcome such desires and attain enlightenment is to follow the Eightfold Path, which is called the Middle Way between desires and self-denial.

12 a.Eightfold Path: * right faith * right resolve * right speech * right action * right living * right effort * right thought * right meditation

13 b. Ahisma – follow a policy of total non-violence

14 IV. Buddhist Holy Text: Tripitaka – earliest collection of Buddhist teachings.

15 1. Called The Three Baskets because it written on long, narrow leaves, which were sewn at the edges then grouped into bunches and stored in baskets.

16 2. It is also called the Pali Canon, after the language in which it was first written

17 3. The English translation has more than 40 volumes.

18 V. Ultimate Goal: Buddha believed the attainment of perfect peace was not easy, that people would have to experience numerous rebirths before their inner desires were overcome.

19 1. Not all people would achieve victory over self. 2. However, those who succeeded would attain nirvana.
