Monday, October 20 th Entry Task Please do the entry task and write the objective down in your notebook. I will have the sheets tomorrow. Answer the following questions using full sentences, IQIA. 1.What is weathering? 2.What are the two types of weathering? 3.Give two examples of each type. *Papers in Notebook *Notebook (check) *Grading *Passes Schedule: Investigate Weathering Pre-Lab Homework: Create a data table to record data Objective: I can explain the processes of weathering I can create a hypothesis for a lab Please have on desk: 4.1 RSG

How does temperature affect the rate of chemical weathering?

 Write a hypothesis using the IF, THEN, BECAUSE format.

 Manipulated: The temperature of water.  Responding: The amount of time to dissolve.  Controlled: 1.The amount of water 2.The tablet size

beaker thermometer water 4 antacid tablets stopwatch

1.Add 200 mL of ice water to a beaker 2.Record the temperature of the water in the Data Table. Remove the thermometer from the beaker. 3.Drop an antacid tablet into the beaker. Start the stopwatch as soon as the tablet enters the water. Stop the stopwatch when the tablet has completely dissolved and no traces of the tablet are visible. (Don’t wait for the bubbling to stop.) Record the time in the Data Table. 4.Repeat Steps 1–3 three more times, for room temperature, warm, and hot water. 5.The total volume of water should always be about 200 mL.

Tuesday, October 21 st Entry Task Compare your data table with the person sitting next to you. Add anything or make changes as necessary. When finished re-read the procedure so refresh your memory of what we are doing for the lab Schedule: Investigate Weathering Lab Homework Complete Graph and Analysis Questions for lab Objective: I can collect and analyze data in a lab to determine what conditions are necessary for chemical weathering to occur Please have on desk: Lab procedure and data table

Water Type Temperature (°C) Dissolving Time (seconds) Ice Water Room Temperature Water Warm Water Hot Water

Make a line graph of the temperature versus time Make a line graph of the temperature versus time

Wednesday, October 22 nd Entry Task Answer the following questions using full sentences, IQIA. 1.What are some errors that could have happened during your lab yesterday? 2.Look at your how to write a lab report worksheet. Make sure you followed EVERYTHING that it says for creating a graph. Was there anything that you missed or did incorectly? What was it? Schedule: Lab Analysis and Conclusion Objective: I can analyze lab data and create a conclusion based on that data and analysis. Homework Formal Lab report due tomorrow Please have on desk: Lab

Analysis 1. Analyzing Data At which temperature did the antacid tablet dissolve most rapidly? At which temperature did the antacid tablet dissolve most slowly? 2. Drawing Conclusions What is the relationship between temperature and the rate at which antacid tablets dissolve in water? 3. Formulating Hypotheses Based on your observations, form a hypothesis about the relationship between temperature and the rate of chemical weathering. 4. Predicting What would your results have been if you had ground each tablet into a fine powder before dropping it into the water? Would your conclusion be the same or different? Explain. 5. Inferring Would a limestone building weather more rapidly in Homer, Alaska, or in Honolulu, Hawaii? (Both cities receive about the same amount of precipitation in an average year.) Explain your reasoning.

Write your conclusion following the format on the “How to write an 8 th grade lab write-up” handout. Write your conclusion following the format on the “How to write an 8 th grade lab write-up” handout.

Thursday, October 23 rd Entry Task Define the following vocabulary terms. 1.Weathering 2.Mechanical weathering 3.Exfoliation 4.Abrasion 5.Chemical weathering Schedule: Weathering notes 4.1 Vocabulary Homework: Finish Vocabulary 4.1 Quiz tomorrow Objective: I can understand important information and vocabulary terms associated with weathering Please have on desk: Lab Report
