Mario Gerla Christoph Lindemann Ant Rowstron April 9 to 12, 2005 Schloß Dagstuhl, Germany Workshop Outline: P2P MANET – New Research Issues

Christoph LindemannUniversity of Dortmund2 Anticipated outcomes of the workshop Clear idea of what P2P networks and P2P overlays mean in MANETs; and, how they differ from the wired P2P counterparts – Are P2P overlays built on top of level-2 routing or are P2P overlays integrated in the routing ? Identification (taxonomy) of current and future P2P MANET applications – Which will be “killer applications” for commercial MANETs ? Determination of which available P2P and overlay technologies and tools can be transferred to wireless mesh networks, MANETs, and hybrid wired/wireless networks – Discuss unstructured P2P technologies w/ and w/out hierarchies, structured P2P technologies such as DHT, epidemic algorithms,… Identification of new methods and tools that are required to design and manage P2P MANET structures

Christoph LindemannUniversity of Dortmund3 Attempt for a taxonomy car-to-car MANET high mobility, DSRC w/ w/out Internet gateways personal area networks and home networks Bluetooth, ZigBee P2P and overlay design models person-to-person MANET low mobility, 802.11 w/ w/out Internet gateways reliable data transport or media streaming lookup services and key-based routing security and misbehavior handling incentive models System building blocks Application scenarios wireless mesh networks high or low mobility of mesh clients dual radio interfaces w/ w/out Internet gateways

Topics for working groups

Christoph LindemannUniversity of Dortmund5 Applications and scenarios Consider mobile P2P applications – File sharing – Instant messaging – Video streaming – Nomadic Gaming Consider Web access via opportunistic MANET extensions of wired Internet –Hybrid of wired Internet and MANET with 802.11 Consider wireless mesh networks and their ad hoc extensions – Community networking – Enterprise networking – Metropolitan area networks – Highway networks

Christoph LindemannUniversity of Dortmund6 Suggested working groups WG I: Lookup services and key-based routing –Design challenges for pure MANET, wireless mesh networks, and opportunistic MANET extensions of wired Internet WG II: Reliable data transport and media streaming –Design challenges for pure MANET, wireless mesh networks, and opportunistic MANET extensions of wired Internet. – Smooth handoff across different radio media (say, ad hoc to WLAN and to 3G cellular..) WG III: P2P and overlay design models and tools – Modeling and performance evaluation of P2P MANET – Path measurement tools for P2P MANET WG IV: Incentive models –Constraints and design challenges of P2P apps with respect to free riding and selfish routing
