1 Today we will be talking about September 11 th for the entire class period. To begin, get a worksheet from the front and answer the “Warm-Up Questions” and “Vocabulary Matching” Do these to the best of your ability! We will go over them in a few minutes!

2 In remembrance of September 11 th, the social studies department is hosting a series of events during tutorial: Tuesday: History of Tucson Fire Dept. Wednesday: Information about the 2 charities Thursday: Career Opportunities in Fire Dept You may receive 5 pts of extra credit for each session you attend. We will also be collecting spare change to donate to two local charities: –Southern Arizona Disabled Firefighters –Axes and Arms

3 Warm-Up Questions 1.How has government and American society changed since the September 11 th attacks? 2.Explain the following quote: –“One person’s terrorist is another person’s freedom fighter” 3.What is a terrorist? Why do people commit terrorist acts?

4 Acts of terrorism Are usually committed by groups who do not possess the political power to change policies they view as intolerable. Terrorists plan their acts to get as much media exposure as possible. Media coverage magnifies the terrorist act by spreading fear among a mass audience and giving attention to the terrorist cause. The attacks of 9/11 assured a worldwide television audience.

7 Why? Terrorists often justify their acts on ideological or religious grounds arguing that they are responding to a greater wrong or are promoting a greater good.

Islam translates to “submission” or “peace” Muslims: people that practice the Islamic faith The most populous Islamic country is Indonesia Islamic Fundamentalism: a society ruled by Islamic law that rejects most things Western Al Qaeda: terrorist group responsible for the attacks of 9/11; led by Osama Bin Laden Jihad: holy war Taliban: strict Islamist group that seized power in Afghanistan; supported Al Qaeda U.S. is at war in Afghanistan trying to stop terrorism and restructure their government.
