Wind Power

Wind power is a clean easy way to harvest energy. It uses natural forces created by the Earth and turns it into kinetic energy that we use to make electricity. Wind power has been used for thousands of years across the globe to turn mills, pump water, and create electricity. It is the most simplistic way to create energy.

The energy harvesting process starts with the blades. The blades are shaped like airplane wings to create positive and negative lift and whole process cause the forward motion of the wind to be turned into a spinning motion. This then spins a shaft connected to a generator which then makes the electricity.

The generator uses electromagnets to create electricity. It works by spinning a piece of metal in between two magnets. This creates an electron field which is electricity.

The problem facing wind power is that if there is no wind, there is no power. With fuel burning power plants, there is always electricity unless a power line goes down. Another problem with wind power is that people do not want huge wind farms in there backyard. In order to make enough electricity to power a country, you need a lot of wind towers and that would mean most of the country would have wind turbines in their backyard.

Another problem with wind power is that it’s extremely expensive to build. In order to erect a turbine, there has to be digging and blasting if it’s on a mountain. This requires cranes, bulldozers, excavators, dump trucks, and demolition teams. Another problem facing them is that they have the possibility of destroying birds habitats. Wind turbines are also extremely loud and comparable to helicopters and airplanes in the distance.

Currently, there are many wind farms all over the world. There's farms in oceans and on land. The United States has the majority of the wind farms with Europe right behind it. There are also wind farms in Asia along with Mexico and Australia.

Some small companies make small turbines to be used on your home to cut down bills. They are relatively cheap to buy. They cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thouand dollars and have many various power outputs. Also, you can construct your own wind turbine fairly easily if you know how to weld and have access to a machine shop.

The worlds first wind farm, consisting of 20 turbines, was built in New Hampshire. Most of the larger farms are built 10 kilometers offshore. Since there is so much ocean to go around, electric companies can construct more turbines. The largest offshore wind farm has 421 turbines and is located off the shore of Texas.

Wind farms are expensive to build but cheap to maintain since there is no need for fuel or coal. The average 2 megawatt turbine around 3.5 million dollars. Depending on the size of the wind farm, it could cost up to 100 million dollars to build a farm.

New Jersey is currently constructing the states first farm in Atlantic County near Atlantic city. There will be five 1.5 megawatt turbines which will produce 19 million kilowatts of energy a year.

Wind power is an effective way to produce completely clean energy on a small scale. Huge wind farms to power cities and countries pose a problem with obstructing scenery and causing noise. They are also costly to the state to build. Wind power would be more effective if it was used on a smaller scale such as use to power a home. A small turbine on top of your home or in your backyard may not be able to power the entire house, but it would drastically cut down energy bills and overall energy production by fossil burning plants. Wind power is better as a reducer than a provider of clean energy.
