Analyze Algorithms For Computing with Decimals and Fractions Mr. Newman 2010-2011

Adding Fractions

TOPIC = Adding Fractions Common Denominator Rewriting Fractions Adding Simplify/Reduce Find the LCM of both denominators. Multiply numerator and denominator of each fraction by the factor that helps create common denominators. Add the numerators of your fractions and keep the common denominator Compare the prime factorization of your numerator and denominator to find the GCF of your numerator and denominator. Divide by the GCF to simplify answer.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when adding fractions? Quiz Time!

Subtracting Fractions

TOPIC = Subtracting Fractions Common Denominator Rewriting Fractions Subtract Simplify/Reduce Find the LCM of both denominators. Multiply numerator and denominator of each fraction by the factor that helps create common denominators. Check to see if you need to regroup or rename. Subtract the numerators of your fractions and keep the common denominator Compare the prime factorization of your numerator and denominator to find the GCF of your numerator and denominator. Divide by the GCF to simplify answer.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when subtracting fractions? Quiz Time!

Multiplying Fractions

TOPIC = Multiplying Fractions Pre-Simplify Multiply Simplify/Reduce Multiply numerators and denominators across. Change mixed numbers into improper Fractions. Compare the prime factorization of your numerator and denominator to find the GCF of your numerators and denominators. Divide by the GCF to simplify answer. Change improper fractions into mixed numbers.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when multiplying fractions? Quiz Time!

Dividing Fractions

TOPIC = Dividing Fractions Reciprocals Pre-Simplify Multiplying Simplify/Reduce Check to see if mixed numbers need to be changed into improper fractions. Flip second fraction and re-write problem as multiplication. Multiply numerators and denominators straight across. Compare the prime factorization of your numerator and denominator to find the GCF of your numerator and denominator. Divide by the GCF to simplify answer. Change improper fractions into mixed numbers.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when dividing fractions? Quiz Time!

Adding Decimals

TOPIC = Adding Decimals Line up decimal Add Bring down decimal into answer. Check to see if zeros are needed to hold place values. Add up each place value.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when adding decimals? Quiz Time!

Subtracting Decimals

TOPIC = Subtracting Decimals Line up decimal Subtract Bring down decimal into answer. Check to see if zeros are needed to hold place values. Subtract each place value. Check for regrouping.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when subtracting fractions? Quiz Time!

Multiplying Decimals

TOPIC = Multiplying Decimals Multiply Decimal Placement Underline or count how many numbers there are to the right of each decimal point. Underline the number of digits in your answer from right to left that is equal to the total number of digits there were to the right of the decimal points in the problem.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when multiplying fractions? Quiz Time!

Dividing Decimals

TOPIC = Dividing Decimals Move decimals Divide Move decimal the same number of places in the divisor as in the dividend so that the divisor is a whole number. Divide Multiply Subtract Bring down Repeat Check for an answer that repeats or terminates.

Turn to your neighbor and tell them what the first step would be when dividing fractions? Quiz Time!

TOPIC = Adding Fractions Find the LCM of both denominators. Multiply numerator and denominator of each fraction by the factor that helps create common denominators.
