2. Making Connections How do we add integers?  5 + 6 = 11  14 + (-2) = 12 This is very similar to how we add fractions. – In order to add fractions we first need a COMMON DENOMINATOR

3. Definitions Common Denominator – Means that both fractions have the same value in the denominator, that is a multiple of both original denominators. Lowest Common Denominator – Means that both fractions have the lowest possible multiple of both original denominators.

4. How to Add Fractions (Notice that these two DO NOT have matching denominators.) Step 1: Find a common denominator.  To get a common denominator, simply write out the multiples of 5 and 2.

12. Converting Decimals to Fractions The decimal 0.3 has numbers going to the tenths place so place the three over ten 0.3 becomes 3/10.05 becomes 5/100 12.936 becomes 12936/1000
