Hello! I am Tomochichi. When I was 90 years old, I decided to build a new town on the Savannah River. We called ourselves the Yamacraws. I later became the mico of the village, because I was honest. mico honest Click on all blue words to learn their meaning. Click on Tomochichi

When Oglethorpe and the new settlers arrived I wanted to make sure there was peace.settlers To welcome the settlers, I gave Oglethorpe a gift. It was a bison hidebison with an eagle painted on it and an eagle feather. The eagle feather stood for peace. Click on Picture

For the rest of my life I made sure that there was peace between the settlers, the Creek, and the Yamacraw. We all learned many things from each other. Because of our friendships, the growing colony of Georgia stayed a peaceful place. colony Click on Picture

Keeping track of time was very important to the Yamacraw tribe. We needed to always know how many hours of sunlight we had. We grew our own crops for food, so we needed sunlight to work in the fields. The hunters needed to know how many hours of sunlight they had to hunt for food. Click on picture

How did we tell time before we had clocks? Click on the Television

History Of The Clock 3500 BC “Shadow” clocks or Sundials first appear. 325 BC Water clocks are invented. 100 - 1300 Clocks evolve in Far East & Europe 1577 Minute hand mechanism designed. 1656 Development of long pendulum clock. 1660 - 1730 “Golden age” of clock making. 1880 Term “grandfather’s clock” becomes popular based on a song Grandfather’s Clock that was popular in England and America.

The Yamacraw tribe used the sun to tell time. They would watch shadows made by the light from the sun. Like the shadows made by trees or other objects on earth. Look at the trees shadow!!

Imagine your day without clocks and calendars. See the sun peeking through your windows? It’s time to get up. Notice the sky darkening? Almost time for bed. This is how people once lived—without knowing the time or the day. Write about how your day would be without clocks!! When you have finished discuss the type of day you would have with your table. Click on the green light to continue

Are you wondering how shadows are made? Let’s Find Out!! Light from the Sun shines on Earth. SUN Light from the Sun EARTH

SUN Light from the Sun A shadow is formed when an object or a person gets between the sun and the surface of the earth. EARTH

Draw the image from the previous slide in your scrapbook. Be sure to label the sun and earth. Write how a shadow is formed beside your drawing. SUN EARTH Light from the Sun

Let’s Go Outside To Discover Each group will take outside the bag I have provided for you. Each bag includes. –List of Direction –Pencil (sharpened and unsharpened) –Playdough –Chalk –Large circle cut out –Shadow watching worksheet While we are outside you are to follow the directions that are found in your bag.

Write your answer in your scrapbook. Discuss with your table whether or not you think your shadow will change throughout the day? Before we go predict whether or not your shadow will change throughout the day?

Remember to NEVER look directly at the Sun!!

Our shadows change in length and position through out the day. Click on the television to watch Emma and John explain why shadows change. Click Here What Did We Discover Outside?

Does the sun move? As the Earth rotates, shadows change length and position.rotates

Morning Noon Afternoon Changes Our Shadow Makes Shadow is long Sun is low in the sky Shadow grows shorter and shorter until noon Shadow is the shortest Sun is at its highest point in the sky Shadows grow long again Sun is low in the sky again

Draw the following chart in your scrapbook. Be sure to color the chart. Morning Shadow is long Sun is low in the sky Shadow grows shorter and shorter until noon Noon Shadows is the shortest Sun is at its highest point in the sky Afternoon Shadows grow long again Sun is low in the sky again

Throughout the day a group of you will go outside each hour to record a new shadow. When each group returns we will record their findings in our scrapbook. When you go home take the time to record the new shadows once every hour with your family. Be sure to bring your recordings back to school.

In your scrapbook you will write a letter to someone in the future. In your letter you will explain to them how to tell time by using the sun and making a sundial. Each letter will include the following: –Directions to making a sundial –Explaining how a shadow is formed –Explaining why shadows change positions –And how all of these can be used to tell time without having a clock.
