2 Biography (1564 – 1642) Started with medicine. Taught science and math at Pisa University. 1590: became a professor 1609: started using the telescope. 1613: published his book on the heliocentric model. 1616: severe warning from the church. 1629: his book “Dialogue on the Two World Systems”

3 Bio 1632: the book was published. Was called for inquisition. He was sentenced to house arrest. He was prevented to meet with visitors or students. Stayed home for the remaining 9 years. He got blind (5 years before his death). His views about Mechanics (Mechanics book).

4 Contradictions Biblical references Psalm 93:1, Psalm 96:10, and Chronicles 16:30 include text (depending on the translation) stating that "the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved." In the same manner, Psalm 104:5 says, "the Lord set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved." 5 Inquisition 1 Galileo was found "vehemently suspect of heresy," namely of having held the opinions that the Sun lies motionless at the centre of the universe, that the Earth is not at its centre and moves, and that one may hold and defend an opinion as probable after it has been declared contrary to Holy Scripture.

6 Inquisition 2 He was sentenced to house arrest. His book Dialogue was banned. Publication of any of his works was forbidden, including any he might write in the future

7 Galileo & Kepler Did not agree with the law of orbits. Did not accept his idea that the tides are related to the moon.
