“It’s a ‘Make it Happen’ Monday!” AP Language and Composition Mr. Houghteling January 28, 2013

AGENDA—Students should: Read and create summary statements, paragraphs 14 through 25. Turn in “Prose Deconstructs Angelou.”

HOMEWORK Finish reading the entire essay. Complete the summary statements for paragraphs 14- 25.

Creating Summary Statements What is the most important information from the paragraph? Should or could you use a direct quote as part of the summary statement?

Summary Statements—Example 13 Making a crushing analogy— “[it’s like] inviting doctors convicted of malpractice to instruct our medical students”—Prose believes that students should read Angelou closely and realize that her writing is muddled and poorly crafted.

Summary Statements—Example 14 Prose summarizes the plot and characters of To Kill a Mockingbird, “mocking” the novel as a “treacly account” of racial injustice in the South during the Depression.

Summary Statements—Example 15 In discussing Mockingbird, Prose contends that readers can feel good about themselves, “never harbor[ing] the racist attitudes” in the book.

Summary Statements—Example 16 Extending her analysis of the reading lists, Prose juxtaposes literature she likes—The Great Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, books by George Orwell and the Brontës—with that she doesn’t: Ray Bradbury, Elie Wiesel’s Night, A Separate Peace and Lord of the Flies.
