Are You a #Bully? Emily Simon Michelle Hutchison Christi Reed Western Illinois University

Purpose We designed our video to generate discussion for our community. After connecting with their previous experiences and understanding of what bullying is, we will then challenge students to consider the ways in which they have used social media to bully others. Students will: Recognize how words and images on social media have the same effect as traditional bullying Identify ways in which they have been involved with social media bullying Engage in discussion of how we can build our community rather than tear it down

Bullying: It’s not just for kids! Concrete Examples Reflection with the question, “Am I a bully?” Practice with a call for action Abstract thinking, “ Have I done these things?” How to get college students to rethink their actions? Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle

Recent Issues on our Campus Pictures of people passed out on Snapchat Passive-Aggressive posts on Facebook Racial comments on Yik Yak Anonymous nude photos of others on Fade

Discussion Questions How does bullying affect our community? How do you see social media bullying connected to the bullying that kids do? How does being anonymous on certain medias affect us? Why do we bully? What are we hoping to get out of it? Have you ever been bullied? If so, how did that feel? What can we do as a community to stop bullying?
