2 2 Exams Summary – 10 th January 2013 You will sit 2 papers that will assess your reading and your writing skills. Unit 1 Reading – Studying Written Language 1hr exam Read and answer questions based on non fiction texts Worth 40marks (20% GCSE Grade) Unit 2 Writing – Using Written Language 1hr exam (straight after paper 1) Writing information and ideas in various forms such as: newspaper article, leaflet, report, letter etc. Worth 40marks (20% GCSE grade) Outcomes: To know and practice the skills needed for the exams.

6 F orm Make sure that you are aware of what form the answer requires. It may be any of the above or more. How will you alter your writing for each of these forms? What do they need?

7 L ayout Make sure you know how to structure and present your writing. BULLET POINTS   HEADINGS Sub headings ADDRESS / DATE Dear.........

8 A udience Who are your writing for? Who do you want to interest? How will you alter your writing for each of these different audiences? Your school? The general public? A headteacher? Who else could you be writing for?

9 P urpose ANALYSE, REVIEW, COMMENT ARGUE, PERSUADE, ADVISE Writing to…. OR

10 10 You have a friend or relative who is considering moving abroad. Write a letter giving your opinions. You have been asked by the school council to write a report suggesting how your school’s facilities could be improved. A travel magazine has asked for articles about places that offer a good holiday in Britain or abroad. Write an article based on your place of choice. A recent newspaper article has claimed that in the age of the internet we no longer need schools. Write a letter to the newspaper arguing your point of view

11 11 When you have FLAPped the question, then you need to PLAN your answer.
