2 What is AVID? AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective class based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative grouping. The three main components of the program are: academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities.

3 How will my student benefit from being in AVID? AVID Mission The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students will: succeed in rigorous curriculum, will complete a rigorous college preparatory path, will enter mainstream activities of the school, will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

4 How will the AVID program contribute to the success of my student? Teaches study and organizational skills Uses English as a writing tool for learning Strengthens their writing skills Gives tutorial help through college tutors Teaches students to work collaboratively to be successful in the most rigorous courses Takes students to visit colleges and universities Assists students with the application process for four year colleges and universities Helps students explore careers through research and guest speakers Test Preparation for the SAT

5 What are the AVID Methodologies all students will be expected to follow? Cornell Notes: stimulates critical thinking skills and fosters test preparation. 7 AVID Classroom Activities Researching and applying to colleges Applying for financial aid and scholarships Visiting College Campuses Interacting with guest speakers Standardized test preparation Parent Information Sessions (Financial Aid Nights, College 101, Grade Level Expectations)

8 AVID Protocol All schedule changes go through AVID teacher/ coordinator + AVID counselor Allow your student to handle his/her issues (they communicate with teachers) Rigor- Advanced English / Take at least one Advanced Placement (AP) course during high school.

A-G requirements: History/Social Science-2 years required English-4 years required Mathematics-3 required, 4 recommended Lab Science-2 required, 3 recommended Foreign Language-2 required, 3 recommended Visual and Performing Arts- 1 year required College Prep electives-1 year required

14 VMHS AVID Program Currently: 10 Sections, 260 students, 6 AVID Elective Teachers 2006: 1 st graduating class: 23 students, 22 students accepted to 4-year college (95% acceptance rate) 2007: 43 Students, 43 students accepted to 4-year college (100% acceptance rate) 2008: 35 seniors (97% acceptance rate) 2009: 63 seniors (100% anticipated acceptance rate)

17 Financial Plan This year’s budget- $5,000 Fundraise/ Donate- $60 per student Donate- Pay Cash or Credit Card to Bookkeeper- Tax deduction Fundraise- Sell the equivalent to $60 profit (Average return about 25% means you sell about $220 worth of product)
