1 Youth Visioning for Island Living 60 minutes to convince: Coasts & Small Islands SC/PSD/CSI

2 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) 1994 - Global Conference on SIDS held in Barbados set out a specific Programme of Action. January 2005 - Governments and civil society representatives met in Mauritius to evaluate progress and chart a way forward. Small Islands Voice (SIV) project and BSP/YOUTH started a process that has become known as Youth Visioning for Island Living.

3 What is Youth Visioning? Youth Visioning is: Young people envisioning how they would like to see their islands develop and change over the coming decade; and Working to implement their proposals and plans on the ground. Youth Visioning seeks to: 1.build capacity among island youth; 2.give youth a voice in sustainable development matters; and 3.make positive changes at the local and national level. Youth Visioning is composed of 3 Phases Youth Visioning – C’est moi!…

4 Phase 1 - Preparatory Beginning in 2003 Regional meetings, poetry, essay and art competitions were held to share ideas about the issues that faced SIDS. 3 themes: Life and love in islands – All aspects of island culture My island home – The environment Money in my pocket – Youth employment

5 Phase 2 – YV Event 7-12 January 2005 Meeting for youth representatives in Mauritius parallel to the main governmental meeting 94 youth from 37 small islands and territories Caribbean, Pacific and AIMS (Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea) regions 2 outcomes: Youth Visioning Declaration & Commitments for Follow-up action

6 Phase 3 – Project implementation Most important phase. Will provide indication of the success of the overall Youth Visioning initiative. What the participants had learnt at Mauritius, would now need to be put into practice! So far: 8 projects completed 7 in progress 5 starting in the next month

7 Proposal process Project Leaders send us project proposals We evaluate their proposals, offer feedback and then set up contracts Projects mainly funded by our partner, The Lighthouse Foundation Budgets range from US$2000 - US$4000 Duration from 6-12 months

8 Sample projects Sensitisation and clean up campaign in Gutter village Dominica, Marvo Didier Helping to create more employment through local investment, Seychelles, Sabrina Marie Young People Against HIV/AIDS, Cape Verde, Lourenço Andrade On the Spot MDGs Radio Program, Tonga, Lyndsey Fifita
