Chapter 2 Unit Question How do we use the basic operations in Algebra?

Open Learning Logs Date on Left…Section 2 – 2 on right

Warm – Up Section 2 – 2 In each problem below, use the numbers to write two division sentences. Identify the quotient, dividend, and divisor in each sentence. 1)6, 7, 42 2)0.1, 10, 100 3)6, ½, 12

Section 2 How do we divide real or algebraic numbers?

Homework Clicky

Algebraic Definition Of Division For any Real numbers a and b ( b ≠ 0 ) In Words… a divided by b means a times b ’s reciprocal

Some Helpful Hints… It doesn’t matter where the negative sign is! (We’ll prefer the numerator next chapter)

Some Helpful Hints… pos  pos = pos pos  neg = neg neg  pos = neg neg  neg = pos +  + = + –  + = – +  – = – –  – = + OR Fractions ARE Division!!!

HoffmaRule I: All problems that feature a division sign will be flipped to multiplication!

HoffmaRule II:All complex fractions will go to DIVISION first, then multiplication. Complex Fraction:A fraction that has a fraction in the numerator, the denominator, or both.

HoffmaRule: Use both Multiplication and Division methods to solve problems! The “Multiplication way” The “Division way”… Locate the number multiplying the variable Hmmm….. Let’s call the division way in solving problems. “Bring it down, Bring it over.” It works well when the numbers involved are INTEGERS. If you have fractions, I recommend still using the Multiplication way.

Try these… Bring it down…OR reciprocate?

Homework Do HoffmaSheet 2 – 2

Now we have new steps to add in solving problems… Deal the Deck Match the Mates Drop the Op – Maybe twice Bring it down/Reciprocate Get ‘er Done
