1 Animal Test By: Julia Mayer

2 Classifications Birds Mammals Reptiles Insects Fish Amphibians

3 Characteristics of living things:
Need energy / food Made of cells Breathe air / oxygen React to weather / environment Grow and change Reproduce (to make babies)

4 2 groups of animals Vertebrates Have a backbone
Examples: birds, mammals, fish, reptiles Invertebrates DO NOT have a backbone Examples: insects, arachnids (spiders e.t.c.)

5 “Endangered” = Animals that are on their way to becoming extinct
Examples: kangaroos, bald eagle, pandas African elephants

6 “Extinct” = Types of animals that have all died out.
Example: woolly mammoth, saber tooth tiger, dinosaurs

7 What is a fossil? A fossil is a skeleton of a plant or animal that is imprinted in rock.

8 How do fossils help us? It tells us clues about the past
How things move What used to be there

9 Adaptations Physical A physical adaptation is an adaptation that the animal is born with. A long, sticky tongue on a frog. Behavioral A behavioral adaptation is when the mother or father has to teach the animal to do it. Flying south for the winter

10 Extinct or “alive and well”?
African Elephant Large ears Giant feet Woolly Mammoths Much more hair Long white tusks

11 Changes in habitat affect animals
If a person cuts down trees, a beaver’s life will be affected because beavers build homes out of trees. Somebody tells a company to stop polluting so fish can live in clean water. If a farmer puts pesticides on a bug and anything that eats bugs can die.

12 Purpose of physical adaptations
Long ostrich legs. Long giraffe neck. Striped tiger fur. Special shark coloring. To run fast. To reach leaves others can’t reach. For camouflage. So sharks can blend in.

13 Mammal characteristics
Has fur or hair Warm- blooded Take care of young Often live in groups Born live Babies fed on mothers milk Many build homes or dens Breathe oxygen A lot are intelligent

14 Reptile characteristics
Most have scales Cold-blooded Care for young a little while Do not live in groups (usually) Hatch from an egg Mother DOES NOT produce milk Carnivore

15 Amphibians They live in water in water at first and then adapt to live on land Cold-blooded Young born in eggs Herbivore

16 Birds Most birds can fly Warm-blooded
Have feathers, a beak, and 2 legs A behavioral adaptation is that birds fly south for the winter They are born in an egg Some birds are carnivores and some are herbivores

17 Fish Live under water Breathe through gills
Some are herbivores some are carnivores Born in eggs No eyelids
