6/10/2014 SERIES 4, SESSION 5 OF AAPLS APPLICANTS & ADMINISTRATORS PREAWARD LUNCHEON SERIES In-House Research Resources

In-House Resources Discussing several types of resources to aid in finding, and retaining research dollars These resources are offered by or managed by the OVPR or Provosts office Resources include:  Seed Grant Funding  Lewis-Burke Associates  Responsible Conduct of Research Courses

Seed Grant Funding

Why Seed Grant Funding Matters Designed to get promising ideas off the ground Help researchers build preliminary data and lead to future extramural research funding Seed Grants also help to facilitate new collaborations and multidisciplinary research This is especially important as extramural funding availability has declined

Internal Opportunities Tufts Collaborates! Tufts Innovates! CTSI Pilot Funding Faculty Research Awards Committee (FRAC) – A&S and Engineering Only Russo Family Charitable Foundation Trust – TUSM Only

Tufts Collaborates! Designed to support preliminary phases of interdisciplinary cutting-edge work Past winners based on all three Tufts Campuses Proposal evaluations for 4 th funding cycle completed, annual competition usually announced in January Funding amounts from $500 to $50,000 Program contact: Dr. Kirby Johnson, collaborates@tufts.edu collaborates@tufts.edu http://provost.tufts.edu/teaching-research/seed- grants-for-teaching-and-research/tufts-collaborates/ http://provost.tufts.edu/teaching-research/seed- grants-for-teaching-and-research/tufts-collaborates/

Tufts Innovates! 2014 competition recently closed, held annually and usually announced in January Funding amounts from $500 to $50,000 Designed to fund imaginative ideas to enhance learning and teaching, including interdisciplinary approaches that integrate research Proposals must demonstrate innovative and creative ideas for enhancing student learning at Tufts Proposals that incorporate educational technology are highly encouraged Program contact: Jennifer Noyes, innovates@tufts.eduinnovates@tufts.edu http://provost.tufts.edu/teaching-research/seed-grants-for- teaching-and-research/tufts-innovates/ http://provost.tufts.edu/teaching-research/seed-grants-for- teaching-and-research/tufts-innovates/

Others Tufts CTSI Pilot Studies Program  Funds new collaborations of multidisciplinary teams/growth of ideas  http://www.tuftsctsi.org/Funding-Opportunities/Tufts-CTSI-Pilot- Studies-Program.aspx?c=130422231602303887 http://www.tuftsctsi.org/Funding-Opportunities/Tufts-CTSI-Pilot- Studies-Program.aspx?c=130422231602303887 Russo Family Charitable Foundation Trust  Funds work that will lead to an NIH proposal with dual PIs.  Funding between $15,000 and $20,000 with no salary  Open to TUSM, projects must include 1 or more Sackler faculty  Proposal Contact: mary.broderick@tufts.edumary.broderick@tufts.edu Faculty Research Awards Committee (FRAC)  A&S and Engineering only. $5,000 or less.  http://ase.tufts.edu/frac http://ase.tufts.edu/frac

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

Why RCR Training Matters Funding agencies such as NSF and NIH require training in RCR for some members of a research team  For NIH, RCR training is required for all NIH-funded trainees (F, T, and D awards), those with career development awards (K awards), and those with dissertation grants  For NIH, policy also applies to “any other NIH-funded programs supporting research training, career development, or research education” if RCR-training requirement is specified in RFA  For NSF, RCR training is required for NSF-funded undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers

Online Training Online training may meet NSF requirements Does not meet NIH requirements, which specifically state that online training alone is not sufficient Once training is completed, each individual must keep a copy of his/her certificate of completion Principal Investigators are required to retain a copy of education certificates for all research team members; these documents are subject to audit

In-Person Training The RCR course offered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) meets the requirements of both NSF and NIH RCR training The course is open to anyone who needs the certification for their NIH or NSF grant funding Preference will be given to those who need the course for funding requirements, but the course is open to the general research community as space allows

In-Person Training, continued OVPR-Organized Training is typically offered on both the Medford and Boston campuses in the spring and fall The course involves six two hour sessions led by Tufts Faculty and Staff, touching on all required topics. Contact RCR@tufts.edu for enrollment information
