1 01/28/15 (B) Writing Warm-Up Vocabulary Set 4 F-2 Book Club Journal Entries and Check-Ins Students will read & demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts. Students will read to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words & phrases.

2 Writer’s Warm-up Grab your Writer’s Notebooks for the following warm-up: Create a short story that includes the following:  Setting: A society that does not have any television, video games, cell phones, wifi, etc. (Cars and house phones are the extent of technology.)  Character: Bored child who wishes life wasn’t just so boring.  Other: A watchdog and a toll booth.

3  Milo thinks life is VERY BORING.  Until the tollbooth shows up in his house and he is able to go to the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping).  Learns about time from a ticking watch dog named Tock.  Embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason (two twins who like to rhyme and reason with each other).  Very “punny” – A favorite! 4 Today’s Plan:  It’s a new Quarter!  Vocab 6-10 definitions.  Vocab 6-10 Formative.  Active Reading  What are “S - Book Club Check-Ins”  Read Book Club Books and complete check-ins.

5 Quarter 3!  Always remember to check Ms. Watkins’s website and Google Classroom for daily PowerPoints, handouts, etc.  All summative assignments have been listed on the whiteboard and hold tentative dates (snow days may change them). Please be aware of these dates.  ROAR!

6 ROAR  R: Respect others—Golden Rule.  O: Maintain ownership of your work. This means checking Google Classroom or the Class Website to see what you missed on your own—not asking me at the beginning of class.  A: Achievement: Keep track of your missing assignments and make-ups. Keep up your already hard work!  R: Be responsible for yourself and your assignments. Classroom expectations: Class bells, silent warm-ups, bringing materials, completing assignments.

7 dilapidated adjective: In poor condition from neglect or age.

8 illustrious Adjective: Very famous; outstanding.

9 Incident noun: Something that happens in real life or in a story; an event, often of little importance.

10 Inherit Verb: 1. To receive something from someone after that person’s death. 2. To receive, as part of one’s physical or mental make-up, from one’s parents.

11 latitude Noun: 1. The distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees. 2. A region as marked by its distance from the equator. 3. Freedom from strict rules.

12 Vocabulary Set 4!  Please take out a pencil.  Complete the formative for set 4 6-10.  Return it to the IN-BIN when you are done.  Read silently until the class is done.

13 Active Reading  reading something with a determination to understand and evaluate it for its relevance.  Reading to understand it.  Don’t just let it pass you by!  Sticky Notes!  Figurative Language  Characterization  Plot Development  Setting  Genre  Predictions  Main Idea/Theme  Reflection

14 Writer’s Notebooks: Book Club Check-In Menu  Three Formative Check-Ins = 1 Summative Check-In  Formative Check-Ins will be titled:  Book Club Check-In 1A  Book Club Check-In 1B  Book Club Check-In 1C  This will = Book Club Check-In Summative 1 (02/04 & 02/05)  Book Club Check-In 2A  Book Club Check-In 2B  Book Club Check-In 2C  This will = Book Club Check-In Summative 2 (02/10 & 02/11)  Book Club Check-In 3A  Book Club Check-In 3B  Book Club Check-In 3C  This will = Book Club Check-In Summative 3 (02/19 & 02/20)

15 Book Club Check-Ins  Because we are keeping track of our reading with Check-Ins, it is important to be ACTIVELY READING!

16 Writer’s Notebooks: Book Club Check-In Menu  Flip to two brand new pages in your notebook.  Left side: Staple your Book Club Check-In Menu.  Right side: Title: Book Club Check-In 1A  Save 10 pages (front & back) with a sticky note. These will be used for the Check-Ins.

17 Book Club Reading  What is due by the end of class? Book Club Check-In 1A  If you would like to be ahead of the game, you are more than welcome to complete 1B and 1C. Be sure to label them correctly!
