MAN UP BIBLE SERIES Living a Legacy Lesson 10

The Real World In this Bible study we will look at a biblical event in which someone has to care. America is a battlefield in the most literal sense. Look around and you see evidence of this everyday. Shootings in the streets, beatings.. the list goes on and on. We will take a look at the parable of the Good Samaritan in this lesson. I want us to stop and see it through the lens of today. The reality is the world thinks Christianity is a joke. They do not believe in Jesus, but they are so important to him that God sent you to tell them about the love He has. To be the instrument of His love. To be His hands and feet. To really show this love we all talk about! The problem is most of them have had an encounter with Christians and that negative experience has caused them to never want to see us again! This lesson provides us a forum to examine and change who we are and to reflect the Love of God to those who are hurting.

The Real Word Luke 10 25 - 37 The Parable of the Good Samaritan 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ [c] ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ [d] ”cd 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii [e] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’e 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Real Talk Have you ever been a “Good Samaritan?” What is your definition of being a “Good Neighbor?” Who is your Neighbor? Why was this asked?

Real Steps What is your response to : “Who is my Neighbor?” First Response was: I don’t care. I don’t want to get involved. Second Response was: I don’t care. I am too busy to stop. Third Response was: I care and will stop and help. Who are you in this parable? The reality of being confronted with this may shock you. How many times have you looked the other way when you see people in need? Develop a plan right now to share and care with your neighbors in need.

Time to Close So here we are at the close of this first lesson. I am struck to my core as I relive the Parable of The Good Samaritan. When I see someone in need; Car broken down alongside the road, a neighbor struggling to bring out the trash, A lost dog in the neighborhood … My response? I am too busy to stop… I have better things to do… I can ignore and rationalize away my responsibility.. But.. This parable hits me right between the eyes… No one cares if you know God … they want to see you care about them because you know God. The love of God must compel us to reach out to the hurting and marginalized of our society. To care enough to help until it hurts. Are you willing to pay the price? Time to MANUP!
