1 Heathhall School Parent Council
Reporting to Parents Has changed this year after feedback from the parent forum, parent council, staff and pupils.

2 What is the Purpose of Reporting to Parents?
Reporting has two main purposes: It provides clear, positive and constructive feedback about children's and young people's learning and progress, looking back on what has been achieved against standards and expectations. It creates an agenda for discussions between learners and those teaching and supporting them about their next steps in learning. BtC5 p13

3 How do we Report to Parents?
Reporting comprises a range of activities including, for instance, written reports, children presenting their learning to parents, parents’ consultation meetings and on-going oral discussions. Staff should ensure that learners are involved in reporting activities in order to promote learners’ ownership of their learning. These on-going reporting activities are closely linked to learners’ reflection and dialogue about progress. BtC5 p3

4 Feedback from the Parent Forum
Parents requested more one to one time with teachers (this was the biggest request from all parents). Open nights were not as popular as parent felt they could not speak to the teachers privately. Parents want a written report which is simple to understand, specific to their child’s progress without all the jargon and without lists of every topic their child has studied in class. The opportunity to attend an evening performance of the Christmas Concert because of work commitments during the day. Parents enjoy the opportunity to come into school and work with their child during an open afternoon or attend a class assembly.

5 Feedback from Staff Teachers felt the current written reports were taking up a lot of time to prepare and issue, time could be saved by using a simpler report. This would allow more time on other areas of “Reporting to Parents” and the curriculum. Staff felt parent/teacher conferences were very positive but time management of these was different for every family and these could be improved by looking at all areas of reporting to parents.

6 Feedback from Pupils Children love the opportunity to show parents what they’ve been learning in class and having their parents come into school and work with them.

7 How did Heathhall School & Parent Council take Account of your Views
We had a parent council meeting where “Reporting to Parents” was a main agenda item. We split into groups to consider all the feedback we received and what we thought the reporting to parents timeline/structure should look like for 2015/2016 based on this information. We compared each groups proposals to find the best acceptable timetable/structure to ensure we were always taking account of all stakeholders views The proposed timeline and how we “Report to Parents” was then taken to a staff meeting where they discussed and finalised the proposals. The proposed structure & timeline for “Reporting to Parents for 2015/2016” was then issued to parents via a school newsletter.

8 What has Changed this School Year
A second opportunity for a parent/teacher conference in May. Parent conference time will be managed to allow more time for families if required. A simpler written report which will state child’s progress at each area of the curriculum with a minute of the parent conference. More information on the look of the new written report to follow. Due to the huge demand for evening performance tickets for the Christmas Concerts, the number of pupils in school and the size of the school hall, the concert will now be split into either upper or lower school to try and ensure each pupil participates in concerts at each level. This year it will be classes P4/5 to P7. Only one school open evening at the beginning of the school year.

9 What Remains the Same The November parent/teacher conferences
Learning folders home in December and May. Whole School Sharing Learning afternoon (February) date to be confirmed. Class Assembly or Class Open Afternoon.

10 Please Remember You can arrange a meeting with your child’s class teacher at any time. We have an open door school policy so if you have any concerns however small or just want to discuss or look at your child’s work please just contact the school and speak to the class teacher. We are always trying to improve our “Reporting to Parents” structure so please feel free to give us your ideas, opinions etc on how we could move forward via the school or any parent council member, we appreciate all feedback.
