1 Preparation of the hydrogen test system Yury Ivanyushenkov for Elwyn Baynham, Tom Bradshaw, Mike Courthold, Matthew Hills and Tony Jones CCLRC Technology RAL MICE Video Conference, 13 September 2006

2 Scope - Safety analysis status. -Test facility site. - Design status. -Hardware procurement. -Next steps. MICE Video Conference, 13 September 2006

3 Safety analysis status MICE Video Conference, 13 September 2006 R&D Hydrogen delivery system HAZOPs: 1) Preliminary HAZOP at the internal review – November 2005 Review panel recommended that “A full HAZOP study carried out with the aid of an external specialist, should be completed as a priority”. 2) R&D system HAZOP study at RAL by SERCO experts – May 2006: -26 recommendations to be analysed ( in progress, to be finished by CM16) Hydrogen zones classification in MICE hall: - Area classification procedure is defined in BS EN 60079-10; - The procedure calculates the volume and time of persistence of hydrogen cloud for a given hydrogen release rate and then assigns the zone type (0,1,2 or non-hazardous); -Knowledge of possible hydrogen release rate is essential ( it is where we have a difficulty at the moment). -> analysis of possible hydrogen accidents is being started. Note: Hydrogen area classification in MICE hall needs to be completed ASAP as it effects the civil works in the hall.

4 Test facility site MICE Video Conference, 13 September 2006 Hydrogen R&D facility was and is still sited in the MICE hall Pros: -The R&D system later becomes the first (out of 3) MICE hydrogen system Cons: -The work on hydrogen R&D interferes with civil work in the MICE hall; - Time schedule is defined by the Phase I preparation time table and puts the hydrogen R&D programme into the background mode (  risk of failure). That is why it has been suggested to search for a dedicated site for hydrogen R&D facility outside MICE hall. Pros: - Eliminates the Cons above, i.e. decouples Phase I programme from the hydrogen R@D programme Cons: - Will require extra work on new facility layout and new safety case preparation, hence extra cost; - Will later require re-location of hydrogen test system into MICE hall, hence extra cost. Finally, hydrogen R&D system could possibly be locates in the Cryogenics Group laboratory- this is being investigated.

5 Design status MICE Video Conference, 13 September 2006 PID: -HAZOP recommendations are being implemented, to be completed by CM16. Cryostat design: - Is being revised to be released to a manufacturer. Test area layout: - Should be re-designed if the facility is moved into a new site.

6 Hardware procurement MICE Video Conference, 13 September 2006 Metal hydride tank: - Is now at RAL; - Has been tested by the manufacturer before shipping to RAL, Yury visited the company to see their facility and to discuss their recommendations on the tank implementation into MICE system. Heater/chiller unit for metal hydride tank: - A candidate model has been identified; - Procurement is being started

7 Next steps MICE Video Conference, 13 September 2006 - Define hydrogen zones in MICE hall (ASAP) requires possible hydrogen accidents list. - Decide on the site for the test facility. - Analyse and implement HAZOP recommendations into the PID and into the system design (by CM16). - Complete formal response to the Internal Safety Review (by CM16). - Revise and complete cryostat design, send it to a manufacturer. - Procure heater/chiller unit. - Revise and complete facility layout, will require a new layout (as well as a new safety case) if the facility is moved into a new site.
