Explain, giving an example, what is meant by the term ‘prejudice’. (Total 2 marks)

Gender & Disability & Religious Discrimination To describe how people can be discriminated against because of their gender or disability To explain how the Church opposes gender and disability discrimination Look at the examples of discrimination. 1.Sort them into gender/ disability/ religious. Write out one example for each 2.Write out 3 definitions of the 3 kinds of discrimination 3.Explain which ones you think are the most serious and why 4.How would a Christian disagree with gender/ disability prejudice? What would they say? (give evidence) **Why do you think people have prejudiced attitudes against Women? Disabled people? Religious discrimination is unequal treatment of an individual or group based on their beliefs.

What could the Church do, to stop prejudice and discrimination - against women ? - against disabled people ?

Religious Discrimination In a 4-year study (2006-2010), Christians were the most- discriminated against, experiencing harassment in 168 countries. Muslims are 2 nd biggest religion and discriminated against in 121 countries. Nearly 50% of countries increased their religious discrimination between 2009 and 2010.

Should you be allowed to express your religious beliefs? Read one of the case studies p.87. Discuss with your partner if this shows that the UK discriminates against religious belief. 1. Draw a table & sort out the pros and cons of allowing people to express their religious beliefs. 2. Which side do you agree with & why? Religion is not just about what you believe in your head, but living according to your beliefs. So people should be allowed to put their faith in practice, or you are oppressing them. If you restrict the expression of religious faith, it is like saying that religious faith is a bad thing. This is discrimination. Human rights mean that everybody has the right to be who they want to be and should not forced to act in a way that goes against their beliefs. It might offend some people of no faith or other faiths, if a religion is expressed in public. This could cause tensions or division in a plural society. Allowing people to live and dress differently can be divisive in a society, when we all need to try and live together. Expecting people to express their faith might put pressure on people who would rather be more private about it. Eg not every muslim might want to wear a veil. Jesus showed kindness to Samaritans and non-Jews. So Christians should follow this example of religious tolerance of others.

Do you think – The Church is prejudiced against women? – The Media is prejudiced against disabled people?

Parable of the Good Samaritan
