1 Villanova Club Sports FIRST RESPONDER TRAINING

2 What are the duties of a First Responder?  Maintain current American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certifications  Activate the Emergency Preparedness Plan and use skills to assess and care for the injury  Report injuries to the Coordinator of Intramurals & Recreation  Attend all First Responders meetings  Check the first aid kit to ensure it is fully stocked  If not fully stocked, get in touch with Max to order supplies

3 First Aid Kits  Checked at the beginning of every fall semester by Max  Bring it to all practices  Bring it to all competitions (home and away)

4 Requirements for First Responders  There must be at least three individuals on each club certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED.  A lifeguard certification is required for all water sports.  At least two of these individuals must be present at each practice or competition.

5 Reporting Injuries  All non life-threatening injuries (generally orthopedic injuries) must be reported to the Office of Intramurals & Recreation the day following an injury by filling out an Injury Report Form).  It is the responsibility of the club representatives who are certified in First Aid and CPR to fill out the Injury Report Form.  If the injury occurs over the weekend, forms should be submitted the following Monday.  Forms are to be available during practice and competition so the reports can be filled out completely and accurately on-site.  Life threatening injuries must be reported to the Coordinator of Intramurals & Recreation as soon as the injured party has received the proper medical attention needed.  Outside of normal operating hours, notify the Coordinator of Intramurals & Recreation by cell phone.  Leave a detailed message including your name, club sport, name of the person injured, their disposition and a phone number where you can be reached.

10 In the event of an on-campus injury or medical emergency the CPR and First Aid certified individuals must be the first responders to the site. They are responsible for: ► Surveying the scene ► Assessing the injury ► Instructing someone to contact the Villanova University Public Safety Department, in the case of an injury that requires further medical assistance. It is the responsibility of Public Safety to request outside medical assistance. The number for Public Safety is (610) 519 - 4444 or ext 9-4444 from an on- campus phone. When contacting Public Safety be sure to inform the dispatcher of the following information: ► Your location ► Disposition of the injured party ► Your name ► Your contact phone number ► Whether or not you will be requesting an ambulance

11 In the event of an on-campus injury or medical emergency the CPR and First Aid certified individuals must be the first responders to the site. They are responsible for: ► Do not hang up until the dispatcher instructs you to do so. ► Each team must have at least two cell phones at site of practice or competition to contact the Public Safety Department if necessary. In addition to cell phones, each team member must be aware of the nearest campus phone from which a call can be made to public safety. ► For all contests on campus, the Athletic Trainer or EMT must have access to a cell phone. ► If participating off campus be aware of nearest phone and contact 911 if further medical attention is necessary.
