2 Why study this? ► After the Civil War there was a dynamic period in history that opened – the settlement of the West. The Lives of Western miners, farmers and ranchers were often filled with great hardships, but the settlers continued. Native Americans also felt the repercussions of Western settlers, mostly through losing their land. ► What mode of transportation became instrumental in western movement?
