1 Types of Rocks & the Rock Cycle
Introduction to Rocks Types of Rocks & the Rock Cycle

2 Aim & Learning Target Aim: Learning Target:
How do we compare and contrast between different types of rocks based on their properties and the way in which they are formed? Learning Target: I CAN compare and contrast how rocks are formed and on what basis they are classified

3 Do Now 1. What are the coordinates for Watertown, New York?
2. What city is closest to 43 °N latitude and 76° W longitude

4 Do Now Check: Read the following statement:
Rocks are made from other rocks, but they are NEVER made from minerals. Thumbs up you agree Thumbs down you disagree

5 What are Rocks Made of? Rocks are made up of minerals

6 Rock Exploration With your group of partner, brainstorm how each one of the rocks were made. Be specific! Hint – if you’re stuck, use your ESRT In your group, you’ll get six post-its As a group, come up with a consensus and come up to place your answers on a post-its, come place it up at the front of the room under the picture.

7 Lets Take A Guess: What is it made of? How is it made?

8 Three Types of Rocks Rock Name What its made up of? How it’s made?
Sedimentary Sediments (ex: pebbles, sand, silt, clay) Compacted & Cemented Metamorphic Sedimentary or Igneous rocks Heat & Pressure Igneous magma/lava Solidification

9 The Rock Cycle model that represents how the three types of rock (sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous) form and change

10 Where can we find the rock cycle in our ESRT?
Page 6 The stuff in the rectangles are the rocks The stuff in the circles are the building blocks

11 Add to ESRT????? Melting = goes from SOLID to LIQUID
Solidification = to become a solid (liquid to solid) Weathering = breaks down because of water and wind Metamorphism= heat and pressure

12 How can a Sedimentary Rock be transformed back into sediments?

13 Practice Questions Work in Pairs to work on the practice questions.
You have 15 min to work on the questions before we go over them!
