Things to do in the Lab Wear protective gear Know the location of safety equipment Report all accidents Read material carefully Wash and clean up

Protective Gear Students are to wear their goggles, apron, lab gloves at all times unless the instructor says otherwise.

Safety Equipment Know the location and use of the following items:  Fire Extinguisher -To use first pull the pin, then aim the nozzle at the fire and push down on the lever to put it out.

Safety Equipment Eyewash Fountain -this is a fountain to help wash out chemicals that my have gotten in your eyes accidently during an experiment

Safety Equipment Safety Shower -used to wash off deadly chemicals that you have accidently been exposed to

Safety Equipment Broom, Dust pan and Mop -to use when there has been a spill or broken glass to clean up

Safety Equipment Chemical Disposal Bin - this is the bin in which you place all hazardous waste from you experiment to be disposed of properly later

Safety Equipment Evacuation -Know the quickest way out of the room incase of an emergency

Report All Accidents It doesn’t matter what type of accident it is you kneed to report it to you instructor so to help create a good habit of doing so. Also because you don’t know whether the accident is a serious one or not.

Be sure to read instructions and jars carefully because some things have names that are very similar and can get mixed up very easily and can mix the wrong chemicals together.

Wash and Clean Up  The laboratory equipment needs to be washed thoroughly before and after the lab. The work area needs to be wash afterwards also.  Also be sure to put the equipment back in their correct places so to be easily accessed in the next lab.

 Clothing  Food and Drink  Nevers

Clothing  Footwear  Always wear shoes don’t wear sandals because of the possibility of broken glass and spilled chemicals.  Pants  Jeans are preferred, again because of broken glass and spilled chemicals.

Food and Drink No food or drink is allowed in the lab at anytime, due to the possibility of it being contaminated and having someone become sick from it.

Never taste anything in the lab This is because the items in the lab are most contaminated by other chemicals or agents. Also the jars that it is in was probably used in a different lab and was most likely not washed thoroughly enough and it will contaminate anything in it.

Never Mess Around in the Lab Horsing around in the laboratory is not allowed and will most likely get you thrown out of the lab. This is to help prevent people from making senseless mistakes, breaking items, and injuries.

Never Smell Material in a Test Tube Don’t purposely smell anything in a test tube. If something is giving off an odor or is producing a gas it is probably toxic and should be fanned away. If you are required to give a scent of something waft some of the fumes away from the tube and toward yourself to determine a scent.

Never Work in a Lab that is Unattended Never start doing a laboratory unless your instructor is present in the room because he needs to be there and supervise the labs so that nothing life threatening happens to anyone.

Now that you know the Do’s and Don’ts of the Laboratory you are ready to begin your work in the lab. Get Started!
