3 The Spanish Language Almost 350 million people speak Spanish throughout the world. Not only in Spain, countries such as South America, the U.S.A, and Mexico too. Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world and more and more people learn it for many reasons such as jobs, travel, family or simply holidays.

5 Madrid Madrid is the capital of Spain. Madrid is a city of culture and political importance. It has a huge international airport called ‘Barajas’ airport. The population of Madrid is about 5.8 million people. It also hosts the world- famous San Bernbeu football stadium.

6 Spanish icons Can you identify with any of the following pictures? Perhaps you have been to Spain and would like to explain some of the icons?

7 The Spanish way of life Spanish people live a bit differently than we do in the United States. The school day starts really early and finishes in the early afternoon, leaving time for a ‘siesta’ as we saw earlier. They also eat at different times. For example, their lunch would be their main meal of the day. They don’t normally eat until late in the evening, something like a small snack as they have already had their main meal!

8 Spanish Food and Drink Spanish food, as you may already know is different from U.S. food. They call some snacks ‘Tapas’. Tapas, literally means small lids, therefore it is like a small portion of food. It is very popular in Spain and is a great way of eating as you can order lots of different tapas.

10 Flamenco Flamenco is a traditional Spanish show that includes dancing, singing, and guitar playing. Castilian, another word for Spanish, is spoken by nearly 74% of Spain Catalan is spoken by 17% of the population in places such as Barcelona Galician is spoken by 7% of the population in Galicia in northern Spain And, Basque is spoken by just 2% of people in Spain. Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain to find the New World and there is a statue of him in the middle of Barcelona Football is the most watched sport in Spain. Many people crowd bars and restaurants to watch their favourite team play!
