Torey HaydenTorey Hayden Born: 21 May, 1951 in Livingston, Montana, USA Career in Education/Psychology Loves volunteer and charity work! Also she has written eleven books. All from (Hayden)

Torey Protagonist  Torey is the teacher of the mentally disturbed children.  In this book she helped tame Shiela. In One Child Torey makes a difference. Torey makes a positive change especially in Shelia’s life.

Sheila’s Father Antagonist  Sheila’s Father has been abusive to Shelia since her mother and brother left.  He does not take care of her, and thinks that she is the reason he has a crappy life. He did not help Shelia in any way, shape, or form.

Sheila Favorite Character  Sheila was a lost little girl but she proved that she was a smart girl and was probably more loving than any other person.  She never gave up and that’s what I loved most about her!

Uncle Jerry Least Favorite Character  He is a misleading, minipulative, hurtful man, that doesn’t have the right to take control of children.  In the book he sexually abused Sheila and anyone who ever does that will never be my favorite person or even close to my favorite person.

Exposition One of the first things you remember in this book is when Torey is looking at the news paper and notices a piece of news that stuck out to her. It was about a 5 year old girl who burned her neighbor.

Rising Action Sheila arrives and revolts, she does this by killing fish and destroying their class room. Sheila shows that she is very smart and tests above average. Sheila freaks out when Torey leaves and destroys another teachers room.

Climax Sheila no longer has to go to the mental ward in the hospital and is allowed to stay in Torey’s class. Torey buys her the only thing in the world Sheila ever has wanted. A dress. Then her Uncle Jerry rapes her which then Torey has to take her to the hospital after.

Falling action Sheila returns from the hospital. Sheila accepts the fact that she will have to leave and move on to the next year in school, and have a new teacher.

Resolution Sheila moves on and finally is not dependent of anyone and does not have any outrageous emotions any longer.

Setting The story takes place in a class room and a little in the migrant camp that Sheila lives in. The book happened in about a year time span.

Themes No matter what happens there is always room for change. The only out come from abuse is bad. Don’t judge a book by its cover, or a person by how they look on the outside. Rating 10

Child Abuse –noun-mistreatment of a child by a parent or guardian, including neglect, beating, and sexual molestation.

Child Abuse http://www.slack-time.com/music- videos/Country-Music/Martina- McBride/Concrete-Angel.shtml http://www.slack-time.com/music- videos/Country-Music/Martina- McBride/Concrete-Angel.shtml http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVKLX1bg EkE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVKLX1bg EkE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVKLX1bgEk

Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse can be anything from making a child feel worthless to giving the child the silent treatment. Warning signs of emotional abuse : fear of doing something wrong, extremes of behaviors, doesn’t seem attached to care giver. (Helpguide.org)

Physical Abuse Parents who are physically abusive may believe their children need to fear them in order to behave, so they use physical abuse to “keep their child in line.” however, what children are really learning is how to avoid being hit, not how to behave or grow as individuals. (Helpguide.org) The point of disciplining children is to teach them right from wrong, not to make them live in fear. (Helpguide.org)

Child neglect Failing to provide for a child’s basic needs. Some times caused because alcohol or drug abuse may seriously impair judgment and the ability to keep a child safe. (Helpguide.org) Older children might not show outward signs of neglect, becoming used to presenting a competent face to the outside world (Helpguide.org)

Sometimes, families who seem to have it all from the outside are hiding a different story behind closed doors. (Helpguide.org) No matter how you look at it the child will always have to live with DEEP, LONG LASTING SCARS
