2 Organization Divided into 3 levels – Primary (ages 6-12) [Kindergarten/Elementary] – Secondary (ages 12-18) [Highschool/Vocational] – Tertiary (ages ~18) [University]

3 Primary School – Called Dimotika – Ages 6-7 are in First Dimotika, 7-8 Second Dimotika, etc – In the first two Dimotika students receive verbal feedback instead of grades for assignments – Grading begins in Third Dimotika, at ages 8-9 – Written Exams begin in Fifth Dimotika, at ages 10- 11 -Ends with Sixth Dimotika, ages 11-12

4 Secondary School Begins with “Gymnasium” -placement from Primary to Secondary school is automatic -akin to our Middle School -three years of education, ranging from ages 12-15 -starts at First Gymnasio and ends at Third Gymnasio

5 Secondary School (Cont’d) Moves on to Lyceum -can either be a general academics institution, much like our highschools, or a vocational school -movement into Lyceum is voluntary -there are three years of Lyceum, First Lyceum through Third Lyceum, with ages ranging from 15-18

6 Tertiary School Referred to as Higher Education Institutions Two types : Vocational and Training Institutes Vocational Institutes further instruct individuals who have graduated from a vocational Lyceum in their respective fields Work on a minimum of 4 years per degree

7 Training Institutes Training Institutes are much like our colleges, but without core classes Entrance into Training Institutes do not require prior education success, instead, they require applicants to pass a test based on the schools focus Some Technological Institutes take students directly from Computer Science Vocational Lyceum as a prerequisite instead of testing

8 Vocational Institutes These schools require a diploma from a Vocational Lyceum Applicants may also be accepted into Vocational Institutes based on prior experience in said vocation as well as the passing of a written exam

9 Stats - 4.7 Billions Euros, or 2.7% of the overall GDP -The US spends 972 Billion Dollars on Education - The literacy rate of Greece is 97.2%, which is lower than the US, which exhibits a literacy rate of 99%
