3 Helen Keller Helen Keller was born in America in 1880. As a small child, she became blind and deaf, she couldn’t see and hear. Later, Helen had a teacher- Anne Sullivan. The teacher drew letters in Helen’s hand. Helen learned to speak. Later she learned to read. She could also write. She wrote a few books about herself. She went all over the World. And she lived to be 87. Helen Keller is a model for blind people and for you and for me.

12 The Life Story of Helen Keller Helen Keller who was born on 27 June 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, America, when she was 19 months old, she caught scarlet fever, as the result of the disease, she became deaf and blind. Afterwards, her parents searched for a private teacher for her. From then on, Anne Sullivan walked into Helen’s life. At first, she taught Helen to touch an object with her hand, and spell the name of the object into Helen’s other hand. In spite of doing this, Helen didn’t comprehand at all, in addition, she didn’t know the teacher was spelling a word. At last, one day she spelled out the word “water”, what’s more, she knew the mystery of language. And in fact this was the first time to understand something. Therefore she got further

13 education. In 1888, she attended Perkins Institute for the blind. She entered the Cambridge School for young ladies in 1896. Four year later, she gained admission to Radcliffe College. Another four years, Helen graduated from Radcliffe as the first deaf- blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She became a FounderPromoter of the American Foundation for the Blind. The Story of My Life, Three Days to See and My Teacher. are her famous works. And she was a world-famous activist, lecturer, author and educator.
