NJ ASK: SPECULATIVE WRITING

Speculative Writing Means to ponder, spy, reflect, wonder and review

Doesn’t have to prove a point Answer doesn’t have to be right There is never just one answer to explain your ideas Rules for Speculative Writing

This type of writing is marked by questioning curiosity.

Writer should make a list of questions. Writer should see the text from all different perspectives. Writer should predict outcomes.

The test question will have the following: A passage will be given that provides information. The information can be used as a springboard. A story ( actual or fictional) will need to be written. Students will use the information from the passage to make decisions, solve problems, and create original works.

Points to remember: It is not a typical 5 paragraph essay. It can include dialogue. It needs to start with a creative hook to grab the readers’ attention. Your story should draw from your own personal experience. Your response should relate to the 5 senses.

Your prewriting should include responses to the following questions: Who What When Where Why

Sample test prompt: Imagine severe weather is about to strike your neighborhood and you have to evacuate in the next thirty minutes. What would you do to prepare to leave? What would you take with you?
